In the last 24 hours there were shootings in Laguna Woods, California, Houston, LA, and the shooting in Buffalo. These shootings can take us to a deeply hopeless place with no solutions in sight. But the truth is there are solutions, just not where we normally look. 🧵
What Democratic politicians do, after every mass shooting, is propose gun control laws that are bound to fail. That and more policing. What Republican politicians do is block gun control laws. All in all this circus does nothing besides allow more mass shootings. /2
An outsized percentage of the mass shootings in this country are motivated by white supremacy, like the murder of 10 Black folks in Buffalo yesterday, the murders of Asian folks at the spas in Atlanta, and the murder of Jewish folks at the Tree of Life Synagogue. /3

As the inevitable calls to respond to this white supremacist mass shooting with more police remember that the police didn’t stop it, are filled with large numbers of white supremacists, and disproportionately kill Black folks themselves. Advocate for actual public safety instead.
I guess folks will ask about “actual public safety” and for one it’s defunding police and putting that into housing, healthcare, education and more. History shows that fascism and hate are also more appealing to folks when they’re impoverished and don’t see any prospects.
That’s not to let a single fascist off the hook, but just to say that folks in communities are safer when they’re housed, and less likely to be radicalized towards fascism. We must present an alternative vision both of public safety and of the world, and start making it real.

Coverage of mass shootings in this country almost always goes to the "lone wolf" trope, especially when the shooter is white. It's so important in this case to resist that framing, and be clear that the shooter is a white supremacist. And that his position is no longer fringe. /1
The clearest evidence that the strain white supremacy that was recently fringe is now mainstream is nearly 50% of Republicans agree with 'great replacement theory' which says white people are being deliberately and systemically replaced by minorities. /2

Tucker Carlson, Fox News in general, Brietbart, the MAGA crowd, the whole right-wing ecosystem that is essentially the mainstream GOP now spouts this stuff, which they know will spark violence. /3

At least 8 are dead and more wounded after a man opened fire inside a Buffalo supermarket today. He live streamed the shooting after posting a manifesto that said white people are being replaced, and identified as a white supremacist and anti-Semite.

One aspect of horrible, tragic events like this at that it feels like there's nothing new to say. White supremacy, alienation, the radicalization of young white men, all of it is stuff folks more knowledgable than me have sounding the alarm on for years.
But we have an unresponsive government that view people protesting police murder as a bigger threat than armed white nationalists. It really will take changing everything to end these mass shootings, I believe. Organize your community both for protection and systems change.

When people say they’re proud to stand with Israel immediately after the assassination of a journalist and an attack on her funeral, that’s a scary place to be. It means there’s nothing Israel can do that would make them reconsider.
Thinking of this in particular. Really frightening to me as a Jew when other Jews see the state of Israel enacting apartheid and committing some of the atrocities our ancestors fled, and just double down.
And if angry Zionists or whoever find their way here, I’m not interested in debating you. I’ve been there and you can read this thread if you want to know how I got here.

Attacking a funeral. Attacking the pallbearers carrying the casket. The casket of a journalist they executed. Israel thinks they can do anything they want, no matter how atrocious, with impunity. It’s way past time for a widespread BDS movement, to defund aid to Israel, and more.
To be clear they think they can get away with it because they’ve been allowed to. Of course more and more people are resisting their narrative, but the U.S. gov still gives billions to support these war crimes. And a Zionist contingent still backs every move, no matter how awful.
So we all need to speak up and push for BDS and to defund aid to Israel. Especially the U.S. Jewish community. Like so many of us I was fed endless Zionist propaganda. But when you look at what’s happening those argument fall apart. Time to push back against that narrative.
