Thread: I was explaining how trans people are being attacked online & in person to a solid financial supporter of minority rights. They sighed that most people just don’t care.

Maybe that’s true? But then again what started out as attacks on Jews, Roma & Queers in the 1930s…
In fact, in a startling example of historical déjà vu, the initial Nazi book burning was of the world’s first research institute studying sex & gender.

Trans people are the unwilling canaries in the far right coal mine: teenvogue.com/story/lgbtq-in…
Here’s just 4 headlines from UK media. First one is the classic ‘think of the children*’, 2nd implies kids are being experimented on (they’re not), 3rd is pure Fascism & 4th shows how a UK govt ‘equality’ body is working to make toilets inaccessible to trans people.
A feature of the two recent Irish referenda [same sex marriage & abortion] was a realisation that until everyone had equality no one had equality. Recognising human rights for everyone lifts everyone up [except the far right, which is why they protest so much]
*The ‘children’ trope is a mod version of anti-Semitic blood libel where Jews were claimed to abuse/kill kids. The same was claimed of Roma & LGB+ when decriminalisation was ‘debated’. IRL criminalised homosexuality for a century & it didn’t help gay kids: encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art…
*The Simpson’s lampoon the ‘think of the children’ trope brilliantly with Helen Lovejoy. It was used in myriad ways during the SSMarriage ref in Ireland [eg. ‘a child deserves a mother & a father’; ‘who’s the father’ etc were used when the ref had nothing to do with kids].
The idea of the blood libel is always to suggest a minority is stealing or abusing kids. There’s even a nursery rhyme about Roma stealing kids. The vast majority of Queer & nomadic people can see what’s going on. People should care.
The British & Irish media have constantly platformed the far right & are running virulent campaigns against Travellers, Gypsies & Queer people. You can support LGBTQI people by boycotting the .@IrishTimes

Thread: I managed to miss the Feast of Bealtaine. It is one of the four major Celtic ancient feasts, the others are Samhain, Imbolc & Lughnasadh. It’s also considered the first day of Summer in Gaelic Ireland & Scotland. It’s usually on May Day. Image
The Feast name ‘Bealtaine’ is believed to be etymologically derived from the Irish words for ‘bright fire’. Thus the most significant part of this ceremony were the fires that were lit. It is also known as the Sun Fire Festival (Celtic Idol, Boa Island) Image
I’ve been sharing my work online for the past ten years with the goal of making contemporary art accessible to everyone. It’s been great & so I’m celebrating with an online retrospective where you can see work from throughout the period. To buy just click the links!

Thread: This year’s signature colour is a purple generally called Cadbury’s purple (after a chocolate bar). It’s Pantone 2685C. [If you have blue eyes it makes them pop]. I think you should pair it with this 2,000y old Greek oak wreath for your bonce. It’s solid gold. ImageImage
Next year it’s orange, in my opinion. Think 1970s. I do love orange. It’s a great colour for t-shirts. I’ve been accurately & intuitively predicting colour trends for years. Image
Pantone also projects colour. They had this for this year. The Very Peri was close to my projection. However pink coral (variations here) is more common having filtered through from 2y ago. Colours can take up to 2-3Y to filter through to the street. Image

AVIAN FLU is impacting birds in the Highlands & needs to be monitored for bird populations in IRELAND too. Dead birds should not be approached or touched without proper PPE clothing. Report any groups of dead birds to the authorities (Irish links below).
Here’s the instructions for wild & domestic bird incidents on the Irish govt website: gov.ie/en/publication…

You should prob contact NPWS to report any wild fatalities as well. They have rangers who can investigate: npws.ie/contact-us
Bird Flu is not a significant pathogen for humans & usually only spread by direct contact. Most forms of Avian Flu do not cross to humans. In extremely rare cases it can cross, & be fatal, so let the experts inspect any dead birds: nhs.uk/conditions/bir…

Thread: Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) was one of England’s greatest painters as well as a populariser of the art of landscape. He was a character in every sense & repays study big time! Here is a picture of his beloved daughters. He was born on this day.
Gainsborough was born in Suffolk & it’s gentle landscape informs many of his pictures. He left to study in London in 1740, where he was influenced by the French Rococo & Hogarth. Here’s a Self-portrait of that time, a Couple (c1740) & an early set of studies of a head (c1737)
