The #CalfCanyonFire is now the largest fire in New Mexico history. It has burned 298,060 acres, surpassing the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire at 297,845 acres.
There is a #RedFlagWarning in the fire area from noon until 6 p.m. today.
"Near critical fire weather conditions will be exacerbated by the development of scattered dry thunderstorms in the vicinity of the ongoing Hermit`s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire."
Taos Canyon area, including Shady Brook and Valle Escondido = READY
Valdito, Placita, Rio Pueblo = SET
Rock Wall, Las Mochas, Sipapu = GO
Tres Ritos, Angostura = GO
— A little over three miles of growth west, south of the 518. It is south and west of The Knob. Still south of the 518.
— Structure prep will continue in the 518 corridor in Taos County
— Want to make sure fire doesn't move west toward Truchas.
— Ops chief Jayson Coil still expects the fire to cross 518 within the next week.
— Retardant from Guadalupita to the Luna Fire scar is holding so far.
Angel Fire FD has let residents know it is flagging homes in the area based on how defensible it will be in fire activity. See this post for details. The chief provides details on the color coding but not the rationale.
Following some confusion, Angel Fire FD Chief Henson has posted a follow-up regarding the triage of homes. The chief is asking for trust. The FD will not change the color based on whose property it is or the property type.
Per the evac map, the areas of Chamisal, Penasco, Rio Lucio, and Ojito in Taos County are now in READY status. The area shaded gray *is not* in any evac status; it is just for planning.
— Tomorrow should be a moderate growth day
— Biggest growth will be along 518 corridor in Taos County, but aircraft should be able to help with that
— SW side of the fire doing well; piece that came out growing north and south rather than west.
— Scoopers kept the 518 corridor tamped down today to buy crews time if it eventually does cross the road.
— Taos sheriff told people who are in SET to have their bags already packed; those in READY should be packing them now.
— Rain today was very light over the west side of the fire, but better in the east/southeast. Would take a lot more over a longer period of time to make a difference in thicker fuels.
