The Representative from Jordan highlighted his country’s efforts to support the human rights of migrants and help them contribute to sustainable development by enacting an advanced legal framework for migrant workers.
The representative from New Zealand spoke about the impact of the #COVID19 pandemic on migration and how it showed the importance of international cooperation.
“Our next plan for foreigners will actively engage local government, academia, civil society and others,” said the Representative from Korea, who noted that these efforts would made their practices harmonized and more prompt.
“No one is safe unless we are all protected.” - Representative from the Maldives, who emphasized the importance of equity in access to health care and other services for all, including migrants, at the International Migration Review Forum
The Representative of Finland highlighted the need to ensure that protection measures adhere to the needs of unaccompanied children, women and girls, people who have experienced trauma, people living with disabilities and those with health issues.
The Representative of Togo shared their best practice of enacting national policy through a roadmap for Togolese aboard to help improve communication between them and the Government, and leverage their skills and investment for sustainable development.
The Representative of Uzbekistan highlighted 3 actions taken nationally in line with the Global Compact: 1 Predeparture training; 2 Extending legal & social assistance, including healthcare; & 3 Reintegration assistance for those returning.
“Migration can improve the qualtiy of lives for individuals. On a global macro-economic level, it allows people to use their potential to raise overall outputs and GDP.” - Representative of Mozambique at the International Migration Review Forum
“Sustainable development…social and political…is the main catalyst to ensure the wellbeing of migrants & tackle poverty, a driver of migration.” - Representative of Cameroon, who highlighted the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Agenda
“In order to implement the GCM and to carry out preliminary work, we have produced laws that seek to combat human trafficking and exploitation of people, and we have worked on comprehensive border policies.”
The Representative of Costa Rica highlighted the positive impact of migration and also the need to address the structural issues that cause people to migrate.
The Representative from Sweden emphasized that a human dimension should live at the heart of all measures taken related to migration, supporting human rights and gender equality.
The Representative from Mauritius shared a best practice from his country where they enacted a Migration and Development Policy, which takes a whole of government and society approach and touches on all migration matters.
Opening the discussion, @UN_PGA noted that this meeting will affirm the importance of the Compact by drawing upon its principles and outlining the challenges in order to strengthen our communities.
Speaking at the International Migration Review Forum, @antonioguterres noted that “migration is a fact of life. In fact, it is as old as human life itself, yet migrants are often vilified.”
The Representative from Kenya called for collaboration on border and health management internationally and
for non-discriminatory testing and treatment for all people, including migrants.
.@AfricaCDC provided inputs from a regional health perspective on the need for universal health care that includes migrants at the Preparedness for the Next Pandemic Side Event.
