I wonder sometimes how much of a role The Handmaid's Tale played in making (white) Americans think that abortion would only ever be illegal in a dystopian future, distant and alien to their everyday. Whereas #RoeVWade is about to overturned in the here and now, in the everyday.
For too many people in the U.S., the thought of losing abortion rights was the stuff of dystopia. The idea that a right could be revoked is so alien to so many white Americans especially.
Never mind that Christian conservatives have been working for this reality in the real world for five decades. And while yes, of course, I've read and was captivated by The Handmaid's Tale, but that's where the very real possibility of losing abortion rights stayed:

I was relieved after my abortions. My abortions were not traumatic. Abortion is a medical procedure that is safer than giving birth. When abortion is “illegal” it is traumatic. I know what it is like to have an "illegal" abortion. feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-…
I had an “illegal” abortion in Egypt in 1996 and a “legal” abortion in the U.S. in 2000. I feel like I straddle a surreal "before" and "after” that is about to go into effect but in reverse in the U.S. feministgiant.com/p/essay-lies-s…
I use inverted commas around “illegal” and “legal” because I reject the State’s attempt to control my uterus. The State–and the Supreme Court–can fuck off with its opinions about what I can and can’t do with my uterus. That control belongs to me.

So successful has white supremacist patriarchy been at convincing white women that they’re lucky to live in the U.S. and not Saudi Arabia or Iran, that so many white women did not pay enough attention to the theocracy that white supremacy was building right here at home #abortion
