I don't think people will fully comprehend for a couple of years just how badly America has scuttled itself by overturning #RoeVWade. Future historians will be baffled at how we in the year 2022 decided to criminalize abortion when 20% pregnancies end in abortions.
As divided as America has been in this century, none of its blunders directly hit as huge a percentage of the population as this decision has. Most damage has been limited to Afghans, Iraqis, black folks, Latinos, Asians.

But uteruses exist in every American family.
Y'all should look up and read the history of the activism that led to the legalization of abortion in America in the first place.

And remember that this is a uniquely Christian obsession.

No non Christian cultures obsess over whether a woman decides to have a baby or not.

For those who say they are tired of hearing about the link between the anti-Abortion movement and white male domination in the US…

For those who cheer the Supreme court ruling on Roe and still claim to be anti-racist and pro-women, the truth Is… 1/…
There are many reasons people join movements. Your anti-Abortion stance may be grounded in your sense of morality.

But morality was not and IS NOT the driver of that movement. It has always been about regaining white male domination.

And here’s the thing… 2/ #RoeVWade
If the impact of well-intentioned people following white supremacists is racial and gender oppression, then those followers are guilty of racial and gender oppression.

Why? They did not require their party to find better way. 3/3

[2] This doesn't even highlight how Wade was with the FBI, and ran successful Nazi spy infiltration and arrests in the USA and central/south America during WW2 for FBI Director Hoover (who oversaw JFK assassination investigation). He appeared to be a dependable ally of Hoover.
[3] Nor does it highlight how Judge Sarah Hughes was a prominent "right to abortion" advocate, even being a public events during the very same months of the 1970s during which she was on the initial 3-judge panel.

A crowd of at least two hundred, so far, are at BOK Center in downtown Tulsa to protest the fall of Roe v. Wade. This crowd is at least as big as the protest last week, if not bigger, and it’s still growing. #RoeVWade #RoeVWadeprotest
A fight between a woman who got out of her car to heckle the car just broke out, but the woman just drove away after several protesters broke up the fight.
Meanwhile, this is a crowd of counter protesters on the other side of the street who are holding bibles and signs that say “murderer.”

It's easy to miss how consistently GOP #SCOTUS majority is ruling for the vision of American rep'd by the red states that elect the presidents who nominate & senators who confirm them. Over and over, the same states benefit & lose out in its decisions on #RoeVWade, guns, climate
Of the 21 states, @nytimes lists as already, or imminently, banning or severely restricting abortion post-Roe, 17 rank in the top 1/2 of states w/the highest per capita gun ownership. Fully 18 of 21 anti-abortion rank in top 1/2 of states that emit the most carbon per $ of GDP
So the same states that are moving thru the opening GOP #SCOTUS Justices created to ban abortion are also those most opposed to transitioning from fossil fuel economy-which Court made vastly more difficult w/its EPA ruling. They are also most immersed in gun culture

I was glad to speak to @froomkin about the ways U.S. media have failed in their abortion coverage and why they refuse to call the white supremacy, misogyny, theocracy, and patriarchy what it is… #RoeVWade
One of the reasons I started FEMINIST GIANT was because U.S. media would not--I know--publish what I want to write. e.g. essays calling out the arrogance and naïveté of white Americans…
And essays calling out the white Christian women who have been instrumental in destroying #RoeVWade…

END OF QUARTER DEADLINE: in order to codify abortion rights into law nationally and protect abortion access in our state, we need to win Wisconsin this fall. This thread lays out exactly why and how. Read on—and become a monthly donor to support the fight:…
The national fight to reinstate reproductive freedom runs through Wisconsin, as I’ll lay out downthread. In the meantime, it’s a state-by-state battle. Wisconsin has a pre-Civil War law from 1849 that could ban abortions in nearly all cases.
.@Tony4WI, anticipating the Roe overturn, called for a special session of the state legislature to repeal Wisconsin’s pre-Civil War abortion law. It took the GOP-led State Senate just 15 seconds to gavel in and out of the session.

Again, concerning debates about #RoeVWade and #Dobbs in #Germany: keep in mind that abortion is illegal in Germany due to §218 in Germany's criminal code. 1/4
You can face up to three years in jail for having or performing an abortion. Abortions remain free from prosecution only if certain criteria are met. 2/4
The abortion must be performed within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. There has to be a mandatory counseling session from a recognized provider. This counseling session must counsel "for life," i.e., against abortion. There must be a three-day waiting period afterwards. 3/4

A tragic consequence of #RoeVWade decision that will harm women:

time to talk CANCER during PREGNANCY.

Without abortion access, women with cancer will have an impossible choice: risk delayed cancer care or severe fetal harm

angry ER doc thread... (1/8)

1,000s of pregnant women each year in the US are diagnosed w cancer. These include breast ca, rectal ca, melanoma.

Treatment may require radiation, chemotherapy. But here's the problem....

radiation & chemo can cause great fetal harm in up to 15%-20% cases

I have had 2 abortions. I know how rare it is for someone from my background to see themselves in abortion narratives. And because of that, I know how necessary it is for those of us who can, to share our stories. #RoevWade #ourabortionstories…
The few abortion narratives that are considered “acceptable” are often prefaced with trauma and pain—as if they were the price to be exacted for bodily autonomy.

It is important to share abortion stories that say simply: I did not want to be pregnant.…
I was not raped. I was not sick. The pregnancies did not threaten my life. I did not already have children. I just didn’t want to be pregnant. I didn’t want to have a child. I’m glad I had my abortions. They gave me the freedom to live the life I’ve chosen…

After reading the Dobbs opinion, here are some thoughts on what the future might hold:

First, much has been made, rightly, of the Thomas concurrence, which basically invites test case challenges to the rights of contraception, same-sex marriage, and bedroom privacy.
As the dissent observes, there is no principled reason those issues would end up any differently based on the majority's analysis. If the men of 1868 didn't believe in abortion rights, they also didn't believe in contraceptive rights or LGBT rights of any kind.
Thomas's concurrence is a clarion call to the conservative Christian Legal movement, Federalist Society, Blackstone, etc, to tee these cases up and get them to his desk ASAP. They hear him, and they will.

1/ My starting point for #SupremeCourt jurisprudence since 2000 is a telling quote from Joel Klein's "The Natural" in which a Republican Senator concedes to Clinton that Republicans don't believe in government, but they love power.
2/2000: #BushvGore, the Supreme Court stays the Florida recount with any opinion justifying the stay and then reverses the Fla. Supreme Court recount order as violating the Equal Protection Clause in a per curiam opinion that can't be cited as precedent.
3/2002: President Bush signed the #McCainFeingold campaign finance reform law, which foolishly included a restriction on the use of independent expenditures for commercials 60 days before an election.

I am a Canadian woman. I have stood up for the rights of women and girls all my life. I also have sought to be an ally for Indigenous issues and BLM and the LGBTQ2+ community. Everyone has rights. Whether they are recognized or not.
When Roe V Wade was overturned 2 days ago, I felt it deeply. Yes, that is in the US, and so far, only about half the states have a ban. But it is robbing women of their human rights. I felt that deeply for them, and also

There is a false narrative going around

“Obama could have codified #RoeVsWade when he had a supermajority but chose not to. Therefore there is no point in voting for Democrats and #VoteBlueNoMatterWho

This is misleading at best and harmful at worst

Here are the facts 👇
When Obama was sworn in, there were:

56 Democrats + 2 Independents in the Senate

Al Franken’s victory was not acknowledged by Republicans until July

Republican Arlen Specter did not become a Democrat until April
Amongst these 56 Democrats there were pro-life Democrats from red states like Arkansas and Nebraska

Including Ben Nelson who held Obamacare hostage until there was an amendment preventing Obamacare policies from covering abortion
