I grew up Southern Baptist. I joke that I'm still in recovery. It was a very abusive, cult-like church. They used to tell me my father, a non-believer, was going to hell. I begged Dad to come watch when my choir performed & my church buddies would pray that he would be saved.
I went to a pool party after church one Sunday and my bikini was scandalous! One of the girls gave me a T-shirt to cover up my itty bitty titties. Can't rile up those church boys with my 14 year old bod.
I missed church one week (maybe 2 in a row) and got a *sweet* postcard from my Sunday school teacher admonishing me, saying that I had an effervescent personality and therefore, it was my "duty" to attend.
Went on a revival trip. Youth pastor promised we would speak in tongues (we didn't) and that he was going to wash our feet like Jesus did. He told us never to pray with someone we loved before we were married cuz a physical attraction+spiritual would lead to sex.
You know why Baptists don't make love standing up?
Cuz people will think they're dancing.
Anyhow, I don't have any stories of sexual assault. Just weird, controlling behavior that was cultural. The kind of culture that fosters assault and enables cover up. I'm an #exvangelical but it was not easy to extricate myself. I'm really glad I did, though.
@minkekj Good question and hello my Republican friend! She is talking about Dems and how we are quick to blame white women for Trump's election because 53% of white women voted for him. She's saying that while that's true, even more white men voted for him. That's where we should focus
@minkekj our attention, out ire, our efforts. It speaks to how strong the preference is for white men in this country. We center our language and customs around them. This does not make any individual white man "bad" which is how I think some men hear this.
@minkekj I'll give an example of the centering I mean. When I first started working, women literally wore suits and dorky fabric bows around or neck. We were encouraged to act more like men to be successful. To be tough. Never cry. The baseline assumption was being male was correct.
@chenx064@mad_cat@d_twit@mcmansionhell And then there was Gaudi who infused every square inch of his designs with whimsy and ornament. He saw a roof and said "why not a dragon?" Columns and thought "why not make them lean?" All architecturally sound but absolutely bananas.
