This opening is laying out things partners Gondo and Rayam told the feds - about each other. Rayam shot three people in a span of 20 months, and Gondo said an eventual deputy commissioner coached him on what to say after one of them. Rayam denies it was unjustified #WeOwnThisCity
And Rayam told the feds that Gondo, who was shot in 2005 outside his home, was shot over drug trafficking, which Gondo denies. A man was charged and acquitted of that shooting #WeOwnThisCity
Rayam testified that he had a woman give him tips on people to follow leaving clubs so he could rob them, or break into their homes while they were away: #WeOwnThisCity
The FBI indeed hid a microphone in Gondo’s car so they could listen in on conversations not happening over the phone #WeOwnThisCity
Allers was charged with bringing his son along on a major robbery, based on accusations from Gondo and Rayam. His family strongly denied the claim and it didn’t end up in Allers’ eventual plea #WeOwnThisCity
Jenkins was just shown riding with young officer James Kostoplis, rapping to Geto Boys “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.” Kostoplis told me about Jenkins having that song on his playlist #WeOwnThisCity
“Off the chain, B”: That’s exact dialogue from the wiretap: #WeOwnThisCity
.@AoDespair mentioned the movie “Prince of the City” a few times during early writers meetings, so it was cool to later see the movie’s star Treat Williams end up in #WeOwnThisCity
Jenkins pretending to be a US Attorney and later offering to supply drugs is something his fellow officers and the robbery victim, Ronald Hamilton, all testified to. Hamilton tried to get his money back in court and said Rayam showed up and intimidated him. #WeOwnThisCity
Kostoplis being taken aside by Jenkins and Hersl and asked about whether he was willing to rob a drug dealer - Kostoplis was the government’s closing witness and testified to this #WeOwnThisCity
State police superintendent confirms two bodies found inside vehicle, but says they have now "exhausted all search efforts in the areas around this wreckage, & based on sonar scans we firmly believe the [other] vehicles are encased in the superstructure & concrete" of the bridge
As a result, they are suspending recovery efforts and switching to a salvage operation to move bridge structure from the water. It was not safe for divers to do any more searching
Do not have the spelling of the victims' names yet, but they were identified as a 35 year old from Baltimore and a 26 year old from Dundalk
Breaking: Johns Hopkins anesthesiologist and husband, an Army captain, federally indicted for trying to give medical information about members of the military and their families to Russia government.. More to come
Anna Gabrielian and husband Jamie Lee Henry met with undercover FBI agent posing as representative of Russian embassy, giving medical information from Fort Bragg "that Russia could exploit"
Correction: Henry is a major, not a captain, in the Army
My first story for @BaltimoreBanner is a deep dive into how the Baltimore Police Department operates today. There have been some major shifts. If you’re not a subscriber you can register for a free article thebaltimorebanner.com/featured/from-…
I’m not sure the average person is aware that total arrests are down 87% from 2005, and drug arrests are down 96%
What I observed over the course of a few months and in speaking with a wide range of sources is a department that largely focuses on process over results. Supervisors are not pushed quotas or grilled on crime, but instead constantly reminded about protocols and procedure
At Baltimore Police budget hearing, Councilman Costello says he represents the 'most diverse council district in the state.' "I hear the same exact thing from everyone. I am absolutely disgusted with the state of public safety in the city of Baltimore," he says.
Earlier, Commissioner Harrison addressed councilmember concerns that there's not enough 'urgency' around crime: "Nothing could be further form the truth. Our sense of urgency is set to maximum, and it stays there, and it never, ever turns off," Harrison said
Councilwoman Middleton asks for stats on how many drug seizures, gun seizures, and search and seizure warrants the District Action Teams (the current plainclothes units) have produced by month over past 2 yrs.
If she's asking for plainclothes to produce more stats.... well..
Need in Keith Davis Jr case: Parties apparently agreed on plea deal, which defense says would’ve been Alford plea, to 12 years, which would allow Davis to be freed soon, but prosecution says victim’s family rejected it.
Kevin Jones’ family “can’t understand why 12 years would be sufficient,” prosecution says
Defense says attorneys affiliated with Innocence Project are joining Davis’ defense
Marilyn Mosby appearing before council for budget hearing after reports of accelerated departures from State’s Attorney’s Office. Says “for past 7 years, my office and prosecutors, I would argue, have been the only stability in this city”
Mosby critical of media reporting on issue, & gives reasons for departures given in exit interviews. Except she's citing same things we reported - that pay not competitive but ppl would be willing to stay if not for overwhelming caseloads; going to other prestigious offices, etc
"We operate on a budget that does not provide for competitive salaries," Mosby says." She said she eliminated open positions to generate savings for much-needed salary increases. Says they tried to use budget surplus for salary increases, and were denied
