And so the day arrives, and Woolwich now has a ‘Woolwich Arsenal’ station that isn’t in the Arsenal, and a ‘Woolwich’ station that is in the Arsenal. (Yes, and a ‘Woolwich Dockyard’ station whose dockyard closed 150 years ago.) #ElizabethLine ImageImage
Going down…
The TfL powers that be will be delighted that the stations/trains is already swarming with people who look like this is already part of their daily routine, rather than obsessively videoing everything… 🚈
Under the Thames, up again, down again through the cleverly-repurposed 150-yr old Connaught Tunnel, built to replace a railway swing bridge over the docks, and into Custom House. RB Greenwich to LB Newham faster than you can say ‘This is quicker than the DLR’. #elizabethline
Just casually comparing Tottenham Court Road station to the last time I was down here. #ElizabethLine ImageImage
In ‘This is exactly what we didn’t want to happen’ news, Paddington is closed due to a fire alarm. Getting to admire more of Tottenham Court Road. Image
Having had to divert to more normal routes, I will say Crossrail is fantastic, particularly the incredible stations, but it’s a shame none of them have the exciting feature of a boarded up staff letter box in a fake medieval mural. Only on the Northern Line. Image
Just as a mini counterpoint to the ‘London’s rails are paved with gold’ narrative, am off to connect with the #elizabethline this evening on this 50-year old train, I think the oldest stock in frontline use anywhere in the UK, for which there is no timetable or cash to replace.
That said, damn it, back to boasting. Paddington is lovely. The lighting design and levels make it feel like a living room. #elizabethline
Round-ling off Crossrail day with the compulsory selfie at Britain’s newest station. Image

Off home the boring way. Does mean I get to use a new (opened May ‘21) rail-air link, and such things are to be encouraged. Station bar firmly closed, so had to translate the plaque about the station master who was father of anti-fascist writer Elio Vittorini without caffeine.
Nowhere does picturesque maritime dereliction quite like Augusta.
Alright, calm down Trenitalia. (At one point we were slightly late because we were held in a loop to let the *early*-running sleeper from Roma past. This is unheard of.)

I’ve wanted to come to Siracusa ever since an ‘Italy by Train’ book I was using while Interailing made it sound like a paradise. But the Siracusa portion of the sleeper was fully booked and I ended up in Palermo instead (which is also great). So happy to have finally rectified.
I’ve coo-ed about how great the Duomo and its piazza are. But equally fantastic is wandering randomly round the alleyways of Ortigia, finding random churches, ruins, plant filled snickets, fine facades and cat-owned corners. The old Jewish quarter is particularly great for this.
And great at night too, when you will pop out of one silent alley into a bustling street of restaurants and bars, then immediately lose the sound again as you head down another little passageway, like a ghost.

Catania may have only the one Metro line (with a nine-too-generous 15min frequency), but it is still very much an experience of two halves. Will the train that turns up be one of the ultra-swish new ones…
…or will you get the more authentic experience?
The metro has replaced the narrow gauge Circumetnea railway’s line into central Catania, so it now terminates here, every now and again when it feels like it, at cute little Catania Borgo. The trains are, to put it kindly, of mixed ages. ImageImageImageImage

Well, I’ve spoken to broadcasters in Britain and Canada, and now the French want a piece of me. As they say in Sicilian media circles, I’ve had enough of this, I’m off for arancini.
[5 min later] So, I sort of thought arancini were like those little party finger food fried rice balls, so ordered two from this nice place that makes them fresh and has a gigantic arancini menu, half of it vegan. Turns out they are bigger than a prizefighter’s fist. And lovely. Image
Not actually sure what shocked me more: the size of the things, the extensive vegan and vegetarian choice, or the appearance in the arancini joint’s fridge of Tennent’s Super. Image

Six months ago, I set out to find out how far I could get in 24 hours by bus from London #bus24. Today - the obvious sequel: #train24. What is the furthest point I can get from St Pancras in 24 hours? I think I know on paper, but there’s some tight connections ahead…
Same ground rules as before: I’m finding the furthest station, as the crow flies, you can get to in 24 hours not necessarily the longest journey. With rail timetables in post-Covid flux, the answer could be different next week. And yes, obviously Turtle is coming along #train24
My favourite St Pancras fact - that the distance between the pillars that hold the trains and platforms 50ft in the air is measured to accommodate barrels of beer from Burton-on-Trent, which used to be delivered here by special train twice daily for insatiable London. #train24 Image

Some professional news: Image
It has been a brilliant seven years at @EalingCouncil as the first and last Head of the Leader’s Office and the first Head of the Cabinet Office. Brilliant place, brilliant people, interesting times.
And now, all the rules are out of the window. More on what comes next shortly. Image
Also some personal news: there really was only one possible follow up to #bus24, wasn’t there (apart from the lengthy follow up which will at some point be the book)? Look out for #train24 - how far can you get from St Pancras in 24hrs - starting in the early hours of tomorrow. Image
