Elite football teams and organisations recognise StatsBomb Data as the best in the industry

Here’s why.

🧵 1/9 Image
Pressures

Launched in 2018, StatsBomb data includes pressing actions. Now we get a true picture of a player or team's defensive performance

Did Roberto Firmino make 217 defensive actions in 2015/16?

Or 831?

Freeze Frames on Shots

When using old data, coaches would point out:

"But expected goals models can't tell how much pressure the shooter is under, and they don't know where the goalkeeper is"

So we included Defender, Attacker, and Goalkeeper positioning in our data

StatsBomb have been collecting Champions League and Europa League data this season, so here's a thread of the team radars from the competition for the match-ups just drawn:
1. Liverpool v Bayern Munich
Group strength is always a factor here, but Bayern have been just fine in the CL this season, this will be one of many cracking ties:
2. Atlético Madrid v Juventus
Best xG difference in the group stage? Juventus.
Best xG against? Juventus
Third best xG against? Atlético
Big defensive match-up.

Since it's the hot topic and there are many new fans around due to the World Cup, we're going to do a short thread about Finishing Skill.

The very best players in the world score on about 20% or 1 in every 5 of their shots. (Seems low, doesn't it?)
On average, players score goals about in line with their Expected Goals (xG) numbers. They can score more or less over short periods of time, but in most cases they "revert to the mean."

Example: Raheem Sterling scored 17 non-penalty goals last ssn, xG expected about 15.5.
Now this is football, which means strange things sometimes happen.

Remember when Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world's greatest goalscorers, could not score for half a season?
