6 months ago, my little boy resisted hand washing. Trad parenting says *make* the child *obey.* *Period.*

I did the opposite. 👇
The resistance was so strong that one afternoon we were in a public restroom for 30 minutes.

"Washing hands is bad!" He said over and over and over. "I don't want to wash hands!"

This is what 3 year olds do. I knew this.

So instead of Trad parenting, I chose Hypnosis. 👇
"OK. Washing hands is bad. You don't want to wash hands," I said. Instant rapport.

"You don't have to wash hands until you're ready to wash hands."

I told him that because I meant it.

Manipulation tactics you thought were relationship skills — and how to persuade instead.

Let's go.

Instead of, "I can't let you do that."

Say, "I see you wanting to do that! Where can we do that safely? How about over here?"

Because the other person will respect you for redirecting their energy in a productive way. You become a helper rather than a stifler.
Instead of, "I promise it won't be that bad. Come on, you just have to try it."

Say, "I like it a lot. You might, too. If not, that's OK, too."

Because people want to be free to choose — and to choose not to.
