French sports minister argues up to 40,000 fans turned up to UCL Final with no ticket or a fake one. Merseyside police (also on the ground in Paris) heavily dispute this. The number quoted is not specific to Liverpool fans, but all supporters. And here's why it's exaggerated...
French police told CBS on Sat around 95,000 fans arrived at the stadium or its vicinity. If 40,000 (going with this logic) didn't have a valid ticket then 55,000 did. Stade de France had a 75,000-capacity for the final. So 20,000 with valid tickets just didn't show?
Countless fans say the first security check scanned tickets to check their validity. If 40,000 had fake ones or no ticket they would have been turned away at this point. That means almost 1 in 2 people being sent back. I was in the crowd for over two hours and only saw a handful.
So either French police got so overwhelmed they stopped checking or the vast majority had a valid ticket and the notion of up to 40,000 without one is hugely exaggerated.
Other striking thing about the French police numbers is they claim "a few hundred" locals from Saint-Denis made things worse. The reality is it was more like a few thousand, with many in non-club colours. Whole narrative is geared towards wrongly pinning the entire chaos on #LFC.
In digital age you'd expect specific numbers. Scanning a legit ticket will clock each entry. That's why the attendance is accurate and must be for safety. A rejected ticket should also be logged. Police say they can't provide a specific number of scanned fake tickets. Why not?
The fact is by the time the crowd became congested, the gates were locked and the tear gas deployed, thousands of fans were still nowhere near any ticket check. So how can anyone determine an accurate number of counterfeit tickets?
French police have changed their narrative repeatedly. First fans were late. Next, 95,000 were in the vicinity (& how is this counted, too, especially when open barriers at the station. Police refused to elaborate). Now, up to 40,000 came without a valid ticket...
So using French police numbers, roughly 1 in 4 fans with a genuine ticket didn't even attend. Yet the stadium was full. So 20,000 got in without a valid ticket? It just doesn't add up and is clearly inaccurate.
A transparent investigation is needed. French police have their take (and general and inconsistent numbers) yet Merseyside police, plus countless journalists and fans on the ground, dispute this.

It was chaotic getting in and out of the Stade de France. Liverpool fans did not arrive ‘late’ and any with fake or no tickets aren’t to blame. The UEFA and French police spin is incorrect. There were train strikes, poorly blocked off roads and eventually heavy-handed policing.
The route from the B train to the stadium was particularly problematic. It had a long walk with lots of blockages. Fans had to wait to go down a tiny set of underpass stairs with people also coming the other way. Then closer to the stadium there was seemingly one security point.
I must say the Liverpool fans I encountered were extremely patient and respectful. I have never seen such intense congestion so early at a major sports event. How can fans be accused of being late more than three hours before kick off? The gridlock started that early.

Chelsea are still fully confident of officially announcing the takeover by the middle of this week and expect UK Gov. approval by end of day tomorrow. Approval by the Portuguese government is NOT considered a significant or time-consuming hurdle, according to Chelsea sources.
The UK Government are now happy with the sale and the handling of the money has very much been carried out on their terms. Nothing needed from Portugal will delay confirmation beyond this week.
Chelsea are also expected to announce further details of the Foundation. One challenge has been getting it ready (in a legal rather than functional/staffed) sense in time.

Chelsea are confident of confirming the Clearlake-Boehly takeover by the middle of next week. Todd Boehly will also hold further talks with Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes as plans continue for the summer.
Fans hoping for an announcement to coincide with the end of the season will probably have to wait a little longer. Despite naturally wanting the sale done as soon as possible, no formal deadline before May 31 has been established and I am told (again) things remains on track.
PR plans for the announcement have been discussed by all parties. Trivago’s “scheduling mistake” perhaps shows Chelsea originally hoped to confirm the sale last week, although sources officially deny this with one telling me “late May was always our realistic plan.”

The notion of "alarm" in Whitehall at the Chelsea sale falling through is being denied by my DCMS sources. Abramovich has an independent advisor engaging with the government. The sale paperwork only arrived last week. There are still key points to be resolved, though... 🧵
The big ones are: 1) How the sale proceeds will be handled. 2) Specifics of an appropriate Foundation. This is important because it (potentially) won't be ready upon acquisition. Gov. do want written guarantees funds will go to victims of the war in Ukraine or charitable causes.
3) There is an "uneasiness" (as one source put it) on Camberley being involved in any capacity due to suspected links with Abramovich even in a plan that involves frozen funds.

The gov. will not block the #CFC sale if Buck and Granovskaia stay at the club. DCMS committee chair Julian Knight has said the pair remaining would be “an unsettling development”. But with neither sanctioned in conjunction with Abramovich, their departure can’t be enforced.
Clearlake-Boehly, like other suitors, expressed a desire to keep both during bidding process. That’s unsurprising since telling key executives you won’t keep them in a job isn’t wise when pitching. Preference remains for Buck & Granovskaia to at least be part of the transition.
From there onwards, their long-term future hasn’t been discussed in significant detail. It’s also a two-way conversation since it remains unclear if Buck or Granovskaia actually want to stay.

Bit more info on #CFC's (almost) new owners. Clearlake have agreed not to sell their majority stake before 2032. Todd Boehly and Hansjorg Wyss always only wanted minority ownership. Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali has been an active voice throughout and is a big football fan.
The Premier League's Owners' & Directors' Test is the next step. This will be formally completed quickly since the legwork and soft-vetting of directors has been done. EPL need to also assess three-year business plans. They have already sought assurances on Clearlake's investors.
UK Government must also license the sale. This is now a formality. Back-and-forth over pacifying the government has been completed and handling of 1.6bn in debt has been 'separated' from sale process. DCMS sources tell me granting a new license will be done within a few weeks.
