NEW PCOS STUDY looking at prevalence, incidence and years lived with disability due to polycystic ovary syndrome in 204 countries and territories has been published
Study looks at global, regional and national burden of PCOS by age and socio-demographic index.
It focuses on years of healthy life lost due to PCOS or any associated disabilities. The study spans time period 1990 - 2019.
A previous 2017 study showed that the global age-standardised PCOS incidence rate increased 1.45% over the period 1990 - 2017.
The global number of years lost to PCOS/associated disabilities rate in 2019 was 14.7, which is a 29.9% increase since 1990.
Although variations in how PCOS is defined is a major limitation when it comes to comparisons between different regions, the study finds that globally the burden of PCOS has increased at an alarming rate.
The takeaway? PCOS is a major public health concern and should be treated as such.
