The weather is comprised of atmospheric conditions. Those conditions are based on available chemistry. The weather is a byproduct of physics. Probably wrong, what do I know? That’s not the point. But weather is a concept we’ve all experienced.

A wee thought experiment🧵👇🏻

Imagine if you will, you are god. A god that looks like us. I say “us” because we know what we look like, so let’s envision this together. At this moment, for all who are reading and participating, god has just become a he, she, they, them and all the cool things that you are.

Welcome. Now as a species, mere mortal humans have built telescopes that can see as far back as 46 billion light years. This is a very large amount of universe. However the universe is more than they can see. So let’s just say that what humans see is gods, I mean your sandbox.

Now we have our space in which to be god. You are now at the controls. Let’s assume that in your sandbox, there are billions of galaxies. We’ve got more galaxies than all wannabe Buck Rogers Billionaire’s dollars combined.

Each of those galaxies will have stars or else they wouldn’t be galaxies. It takes a lot of stars to light up a galaxy. Probably a Black Hole hole too, but we don’t want to get dragged over there, so I’ll move on. Each of those stars may have orbiting planets.

Some of those planets may have life in some form on them. So let’s remember now, you are god. This is your sandbox. You can do whatever you want. You can say life exists on all planets. You can simply make it so. So choose one. Go on, pick one of your planets.

Did you choose a planet that maybe has a sun that is not as bright? Not as warm? Larger, smaller? Does it rain diamonds? Are there diamond rivers flowing to diamond oceans? Does it rain a lot there? Do the diamonds serve a purpose for any life you made?

Does that life have life? Meaning are there microbes, bacteria? Did you include viruses on your planet? That’s pretty detailed and down in the weeds. Did you include weeds? I didn’t. Let’s bring it up a level. Did you include a moon? Mine has a moon.

Now let’s say each of us went on vacation to the planet of another person who is also reading this. Feel free to use my moon to sit upon, it’s rather comfortable. Now…what do you see? Is their planet made of donuts?

Actually, you might not recognize if this planet even has life, because it isn’t yours. You may not recognize if there is weather on that planet, because it isn’t yours. You may be looking at a planet that is completely devoid of all things. This is a planet imagined by another.

Now imagine the planet you’re looking at is the exact opposite of yours. Would you want to change it? Again, it’s a bit difficult to think about because you don’t know what’s important to the person who created it. Try to envision their planet using your omniscience.

What choices did they make? You may think to yourself, ooh, that’s awesome, I’m going to bring that idea back to my planet. I mean, why just float around in empty space when you can sit comfortably on a moon, amirite? Let’s say, you do discover life on their planet.

How does it function? Are there birds? From a design perspective, did the other god create a planet for the life that is there to thrive? Are there people? Do they have everything they need? Have they been provided for? Do they have to pull weeds? Are there mosquitoes?

Did any of the people on this planet notice that their god went to another planet and *you’re* there now? Did it matter to them? Did anything change as a result of this? Have you thought about the weather on your planet since you’ve been gone? Have the diamond lakes dried?

He says god exists, She’s says there is no god, They could be thinking there is one right now sitting on our moon visiting from another planet in someone’s wee thought experiment for all we know.

But there are things we do know. We know the chances are pretty good that life can exist throughout the 46 billion light years of universe we can see. We know some planets are hellscapes. Were you horrified by someone else’s planet? Would you want to intervene if possible?

Now for the final portion of our experiment. A big thank you to anyone who has come this far. We live in a vast universe and you could be anywhere doing anything else right now. I appreciate you spending a bit of your #MemorialDay with me.

We are now back on planet Earth.

I suspect…I don’t know…but I suspect, that if you’re reading this, you most likely envisioned a beautiful, calm utopia maybe some water falls. Something chill to look at. Peaceful. Maybe your planet plays Prince songs where the sky is all purple and the people run everywhere.

We can use this life to try to attain that peace right here on this planet. We can choose to live with racism or choose not to, we can choose to live with misogyny, repression, war, mass shootings, corruption in our government, bullying or we can choose not to.

We can choose to live on a planet with inequality, inequity, incapable leaders or we can choose not to. We can choose to be forced to live by the *beliefs* of those with all the power or we can choose not to.

I say this with all the gravity of the Black Hole in the center of our galaxy: This November is the Election to Save our Democracy. This election we have to make a choice. We can choose to honor those who fought fascism by again rising to defeat it, or we can choose not to.
