Moisture retention is a myth. If moisture is water and water evaporates, you can’t retain it. Soooo…. What can you do? You replace it. How do you replace it? Wash your hair. (1)
I know what you’re thinking. “Oils and creams help retain moisture!” No they don’t. Oils and creams build up, attract dirt, and make it difficult for water (true moisture) from penetrating INTO (not sitting on top of) the hair. Using a spray bottle after setting doesn’t work (2)
To add to the problematic practice of using creams and oils to ‘retain’ moisture, I have bad news. Are you ready? Y’all ain’t ready. Ok, Ok, Ok. Here it is…. (3)
After 3-4 days, your hair is dirty. Moisturizing your hair with oils and creams to relieve the dryness is just a feeling. Adding those products (on dirty hair, mind you), makes it FEEL soft and manageable. That feel is effective not nourishing. (4)
If you continuously add oils and creams to your hair because it feels dry, you have chronic, dry hair. Chronic, dry hair means dehydration. Dehydration means some level of damage (Oh, yeah! There are levels to this shit. But that’s a different thread). (5)
Dehydration you can reverse with time, mindfulness and the correct products. Damage cannot be reversed. A good start to healthier hair care practices is to shampoo and condition, WEEKLY. Even better, search #30DayHairDetox. What to do about damage? See a pro (because levels) (6)
Oils and creams aren’t bad. People are just using them wrong. For the most coveted natural curly styles (wash n Gos & Twist Outs), you don’t need oils or creams. (7)
