A shower thought on "will #GameFi sustain" and if so, "what are some meta metrics to prove so".

#web2 #web3 #games.
Trying to argue why gamefi is not yet a sustainable construct. No numerical evidence, just challengeable logic.

Games in 2022 are distinguished from that in 2008. Graphics are better, sound effects are more remarkable. We've got epic OST and even play-to-earn to spice things up.

Blizzard, Ubisoft, Kojima production, and many others defined my teenage memory....

...but will web3 gaming be that for this generation of teenagers?

I begin with this because history is continuous. If the next generation isn't even interested or doesn't have interaction with gamefi now, I wonder how generation-passing web3 gaming will be.

You usually date a classmate and then start using Tinder. You almost always bought your first milk before using Instacart. You probably learned about Mia Kalifa before Phub.

Teenagers play video games. But is web3 games a natural continuation of web2 games? Doubt.
1.3/n

Further, I believe web3 gaming is not yet a natural continuation of web2 gaming for the next generation. Reasons below.
2/n

Indeed, the internet was not as developed back then, not to mention video games. It is false to say that play-to-earn won't become the future of gaming because it does not resemble any history.

Never have we ever had such a powerful financial structure in any video game.

Yet we all know if a gamefi, however marketed as a "far-fetch world with dreamy stories," gets reduced to gold farming, its doom looms ahead, not to mention passing down to / involving the next generation.
4/n

I grew up with Starcraft, Warcraft, League, CS, L4D, C&C, Japanese Gal-game & Visual Novels.

Some traits in them are common, and I believe they are why these games left an impression and became a precious memory in me & many.
5/n -

First, these games immersed players in another world and enabled their own imagination & interpretation.

Through simple text window + images, Yosuga no Sora put me into the life of a fictional transfer brother, who dates pretty anime girls. I like that.

RTS and FPS are less delicate in the storyline but visually and aurally stimulating. Things move fast, units/items are cool, and the feedback system (e.g. unit dying sound) is epic.

you don't need to be a starcraft2 pro to know, if the opponent has 3 colossus, you r fked. Colossus are the three war robots shooting thermal beams

Not saying web3 games cannot attain the same level of storytelling or UX. But we must recognize that gamefi is both benefiting from and held back by tokens.

Gamefi devs aren't just devs but also Federal Reserve.
You rarely see good game dev coming out of FED.
6.1/n

I also believe in gamefi, tokenomics outweighs other components.

Even if you have a good story and epic in-game experience, one malicious trading attack can and will tremendously hurt your entire game. We know how people are good at funding and the tragedy continues

This almost demands too much from the founding team. I recommend this writeup to learn more about this miss of talent issue in web3 gamefi.

The second trait is you played these games with people. it is part of your social life.

This conflicts with a real issue: adoption rate. Web3 seems too prohibiting to the younger generation; it is still confusing for many adults.
8/n

Plus, the financially potent narrative of web3 is also detrimental. Parents already have negative regard for games and cryptocurrency, and I doubt many will welcome their kids to web3 gaming.

I'm just not sure how soon kids can start playing web3 games and leaving memory.
9/n

These two are all my current thoughts, and they boil down to
1. Gamefi need to have decently sustainable tokenomics deisng
2. Web3 adoption is still low.

Point 1 is asking devs to do the FED job, and point 2 has a16z saying we are still in the 1995 stage of internet.

My body and mind is quite exhausted recently due to life issue, which is why this thread is dim-toned. Nevertheless, I do believe we have problems ahead to solve to truly build a web3 future.

I am not dim-hearted though.

I think the bear market is a good chance to build calmly. As a VC scout I am still eager and excited to meet teams working on relevant projects.

稳中向好。
