I think, overall, most Canadians have had positive or uneventful voting experiences for decades. So what is going on in #OntarioElection2022 ? People told they have already voted? Machines down & no system for running paper-only ballots? Polling stations being moved last minute?
I know, we mustn't question the voting system, lest it throw shade on the veracity of the election results. So they say. But so many issues in so many locations? What is going on? Were elections staff poorly trained this time? Was the technology not thoroughly tested in advance?
This all seems weird because Canadian elections usually run very smoothly. I'm not saying it's some kind of vote suppression conspiracy, but @ElectionsON is probably going to want to take a look at why there were so many problems.
And, seriously, what "equipment" do you need to switch over to paper-only voting if the machine is down? A box with a slit in the top. A makeshift ballot box is better than people not getting to vote.

There are an extraordinary number of people who are just disconnected from the news. There have always been people who found the news boring, or depressing, and tried to avoid it. But enough people were engaged that they would hear about the big stuff. 1/9
People used to watch tv, listen to the radio, pick up a paper to read while having a coffee...And there would be exposure to the news and advertising But now it is possible for us to live almost perfectly curated media lives. 2/9
Music playlists enable us to listen to what we want to hear, thus never exposing us to even the 90 second news updates every hour on a radio station. Streaming services allow us to watch content without ads. 3/9
I am disappointed. I am disappointed that fewer than half of Ontarians bother to vote. I should not be surprised though. This, our political world, is unfolding in real-time, with drama larger than most can imagine, yet people are glued to 90 Day Fiance and the Depp/Heard trial.
Politics affects your life. It controls how much you will be paid, how long you have to work, whether your workplace is safe. It controls who you can marry, how safe your community is, and whether there is healthcare you can afford when you need it.
Politics determines whether public money is spent for the public good (education, healthcare, social programs) or to make a handful of wealthy people much, much wealthier.
There are a lot of people out there who try to shut down concerns. And I wonder why that is. I am going to give some real-life examples here. 1/16
It is leaked that Roe vs Wade will likely be overturned and women, both in the US and Canada become concerned. In the US, repressive misogynist Republicans are already pushing draconian legislation which would criminalize women for miscarriage. And in Canada... 2/16
We have conservative politicians who are vetted by anti-abortion groups, promoted by those group, possibly funded by those groups, and who, on a fairly regular basis, try to introduce anti-abortion legislation as private members bills. 3/16
Since Ontarians are on the cusp of choosing who will lead their province and in what direction, I thought I would reprise this thread: 1/19 #OntarioVotes
Canadians, language matters. Conservatives know this. They have been deliberately changing our terms of reference for years. We have seen them reframe lobbyists as "partners", and regular folks with local concerns as "special interest groups" (negative connotation). 2/19
In this pandemic it has been even more critically important for us to consider the well-being of others. We need to recognize the community we belong to. I suggest we push-back against one of the most insidious changes to popular speech championed by conservatives. 3/19
Just going non-political for a moment... What is it with the damn weeds? I weed my garden and I swear, new weeds are coming up as soon as I finish doing a row. And I am using a fork, turning over the soil, ripping out the root networks, smashing it all to bit, and still... 1/6
The stuff I want to grow, nothing exotic; peas and beans and carrots and beets, you know, that kind of stuff, if it's a tiny bit too warm or cold, or too wet or too dry, or if you look at them the wrong way, they wilt and die. But thistles? Dandelions? Fescue? Holy crap... 2/6
Nothing seems to kill that stuff. I am not using chemicals, because vegetable garden, and I can't in good conscience support Monsanto et al., but man, I tell ya, this is so much bloody hard work for so little return. 3/6
Say what now? If I park in a no parking spot, my vehicle gets towed & I pay a towing fee AND an impound fee AND a ticket. Not to mention the cost of getting to the impound lot. These yahoos just had their crazy convoy blockading trucks handed right back to them? That's just wrong
And that's just being a few minutes late after the rush hour no parking comes into effect. That's not leaving the vehicle sitting there for days/weeks and obstructing traffic and creating a nuisance, and everything else. No. Nope. This is not right.
I know this because it happened to me once. My Dad was dying of pancreatic cancer and the nurse had called to say I should come in and bring the kids b/c they were going to put him on oxycontin and we should have a visit while he was still fully lucid.
