For many, writing in a new language isn’t the sexiest skill to work on.

Speaking and listening are more fun, whilst reading is easier to practise.

So why bother?

Here are 6 unobvious reasons why a writing habit is a game changer...

• 1) fill holes in your vocabulary

At first, you may realise you need a lot of new vocabulary. Don't let this discourage you.

Searching for these words, adding them to your vocabulary system and then using them will cement new words into your brain.
• 2) help improve your speaking

Organising your ideas on paper will create and maintain neural pathways in your brain.

This makes you more familiar with sentence/grammar construction, more comfortable with specific topics and helps you remember words faster in a conversation.
• 3) an indicator of progress

Writing allows you to see your strong points and more importantly, your weak points.

Looking back at your writings in the future will show how much you’ve advanced.

And sometimes a little reminder of how far you’ve come keeps motivation high.
• 4) put what you learn into practice

Whether you want to review past tenses or reflect on a new topic covered in your class, writing is a way to put your new knowledge into action.

This extra practice helps solidify what you learn and boosts your ability to remember it.
• 5) it’s therapy from you to you

Writing enhances self-awareness which is key for good mental health.

Expressing your thoughts, memories and feelings on a blank page is one of the best ways to release emotions and have mental clarity.

And if it's in your TL, even better.
• 6) sharpen your creativity

Writing is one of the best ways to flex your imagination.

At first staring at an empty page can be scary, but with more practice the creative juices start to flow more easily.
5 ways to start writing…

• keep a diary
• join a bilingual whatsapp/telegram/discord group
• use a book of writing prompts
• blog your language journey in your TL
• interact with social media users in your TL
Remember… your writing doesn’t have to be a masterpiece.

It doesn’t matter the level or the language.

The important thing is putting words on the page.

Starting to speak a new language can be the scariest.

When I started, I thought...

“Will people understand me? Is my accent too thick? Will they switch to English?”

Here are 4 steps I followed to lose my doubts and sound more natural in my new language⬇️

• 1) Imitate a specific accent

This lets you identify with people from a specific region whilst other natives place you on the map of their own country.

The amount of “Wow you sound like you’re from X region” comments will surprise you... and it's a great ice-breaker.
Prioritise consuming media from that region (youtube videos, TV channels) and if possible, look for a tutor from there too!

In my case, people now tell me I sound like I'm from the west of Spain. Although I don't 100% believe them, it still gives me confidence!
