First, a disclaimer: I’m going to pick at some details here but I don’t want to get all Neil deGrasse-Tyson and be a party pooper

This movie is a fun, summer popcorn flick about AIRPLANES. It’s not a science textbook. So I can enjoy it even if they missed some things
Let’s start there: I had a BLAST watching this movie. Exactly what I thought it would be. Lots of jets. Lots of action. Lots of fun flying fast. Who cares if the plot makes sense? (it doesn’t). FIGHTER JETS

So yeah it rocked. Highly recommended

HYPERSONICS REALITY CHECK

I'm happy with how the CNN video turned out & it was great to show off the lab

The headline is a bit misleading though (I get it, this is how media works) & many commenting clearly just read the headline

Okay, are Russia & China ahead of the US in hypersonic missile testing? It's complicated.

Let's start with Russia. TBH I am not concerned with Russia's hypersonic ground test infrastructure (wind tunnels). I do not see it as competitive in this sphere. But...
Most of what they are publicizing has been flight test. They've done a good job modifying existing systems to accommodate a "hypersonic" missile. @RALee85 put it well that what they've been using in Ukraine is just an air-launched ballistic

Got the fair question: why so hard on Elon?

For anyone relatively new here, a quick (incomplete) summary of my sentiment

I’m a big SpaceX fan but wish Elon would be a better human. I didn’t provide links but you can Google all this stuff
And yes I have higher expectations of him than the average person. You can consider that unfair but given his platform I wish he did more

I also recognize his companies have achieved a lot—but IMO a successful business does not justify his behavior

Respectfully, I accept that no solution will make everyone happy. I learned that a long time ago as a teacher. We aren’t obligated to accommodate the extremes on either side if they are unwilling to make a good faith effort to compromise. It’s up to the rest of us to work it out Image
In a true compromise you won’t get everything you want. You will sacrifice some things and have to hold your nose to accept others. There will be elements included you see as pointless, wasteful, and/or counterproductive. That’s a compromise. Unfortunately some are incapable
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should have a voice. I encourage them to make their opinions heard. But if we wait to find solutions that 100% of people are happy with we will get nowhere
