(1/8) A new @Gallup poll shows a gain in pro-choice sentiment. However, pro-lifers need not be worried -- here's why
(2/8) The poll shows 55% of Americans identify as "pro-choice." This is a 5 percentage point gain from the last Gallup poll taken in May 2021.
Regardless of how the questions were worded, there was a 5-6 percentage point gain in favor of legal abortion since last year's poll,
(3/8) Nearly all of the gain in "pro-choice" sentiment came from Democrats.
Last year 70% of Democrats identified as pro-choice.
This year 88% of Democrats identified as pro-choice.
Greater pro-choice identification among Democrats might make little difference politically.
(4/8) The most important lesson from this poll is that fluctuations in abortion attitudes are driven by current events
According to @Gallup, there were gains in pro-life sentiment during
A) Mid to late '90s (Debate over partial birth abortion ban)
B) 2013 (Kermit Gosnell trial)
(5/8) Similarly according to @Gallup, there were gains in "pro-choice" sentiment in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Many thought the Supreme Court was poised to overturn Roe v. Wade before the Webster decision (1989) and the Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision (1992).
(6/8) The @Gallup poll was mostly conducted in the days after the draft decision in Dobbs was leaked.
Most of the subsequent media coverage was not sympathetic to the pro-life position. As such, it is unsurprising the @Gallup poll showed an increase in "pro-choice" sentiment.
(7/8) To their credit, for the only the 7th time in the past 26 years -- @Gallup included questions about late-term abortions.
55% thought abortions should be "generally illegal" in the 2nd trimester
71% thought abortions should be "generally illegal" in the 3rd trimester
(8/8) Pro-lifers do not be frustrated or discouraged by these polls. Public attitudes on abortion often fluctuate.
Many of our policy goals enjoy strong public support. As such, keep up your efforts in building a culture of life!

(1/8) Pro-life friends, here are some comments on the @propublica piece.
It purportedly shows that pro-life policies have led to an increase in Sepsis cases.
There is less here than meets the eye.
(2/8) Taking their data at face value, since the TX Heartbeat Act took effect, the average annual increase in sepsis cases (involving pregnancy loss) was 28.
Sepsis is a serious issue. But there has not been an enormous surge in sepsis cases involving pregnancy loss.
(3/8) I would add that there are nearly 400,000 babies born in Texas every year.
As such, about 1 in every 14,000 pregnancies will involve sepsis.
(1/6) Pro-lifers, I'm sure many of you have seen the latest @JAMAPediatrics study which claims that the Texas Heartbeat Act increased infant deaths in 2022.
It has received saturation coverage from the mainstream media.
There's less here than meets the eye. Here's my analysis.
(2/6) Infant deaths increased in TX. However, this is partly because more babies were born.
Because of the TX Heartbeat Act, TX births increased by over 16,000 in 2022.
When the infant mortality rate (instead of infant deaths) is considered, the increase is less dramatic.
(3/6) Also, the TX infant mortality rate in 2022 was well within historical norms.
The Texas infant mortality rate was 5.75 per thousand births.
This is almost identical to the average infant mortality rate in Texas between 2007 and 2020.
Many have asked for some commentary about the recent JAMA Internal Medicine study which claims that about 64,000 children have been conceived in rape in states that have enacted strong pro-life laws post-Dobbs,
Well here you go!
(2/7)
This is one of the most biased and flawed pieces of research that I have seen in my years as a social scientist.
The fact that it was published in a peer reviewed journal gives it respectability and credibility that it simply does not deserve
(3/7)
First, the authors claim that about 12.5 % of rapes result in a conception.
A survey of rape victims that was analyzed in an academic journal puts that figure at closer to 5%.
Even this 5% figure is high because some of the people reported multiple rapes.
(1/6) Pro-life friends, @CNN is reporting that infant mortality rate in Texas dramatically increased in 2022.
Unsurprisingly, their spin is that the increase was caused by the Texas Heartbeat Act which took effect in September 2021.
For several reasons this is misleading.
(2/6) The TX infant mortality rate data is not publicly available. We do not have a good sense of where these deaths are happening. It is possible that increased rate of illegal immigration might have played a role.
(3/6) Also, @CNN engages in some statistical sleight of hand. Infant mortalities in Texas might have increased in 2022, but so did births!
As such, instead of looking at the number of infant mortalities, a better measure would be the infant mortality rate (per thousand births).
(3/11) This is likely a short term shift. Research shows that abortion attitudes shift in response to current events.
There was a gain in public support for abortion prior to the Webster in 1989 & Casey in 1992 when some thought the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade.
(1/7) Pro-Lifers, it was a tough night in Kansas. There are still more votes to be counted, but things do not look good for the "Value Them Both" Amendment.
Please do not despair, this was going to be an uphill battle for pro-lifers for a couple reasons.
(2/7) First, a good body of academic research shows that money plays a large role in who wins statewide ballot propositions.
Since abortion is a multi-billion dollar industry subsidized by taxpayers, our opponents can almost always outspend us.
(3/7) Second, history shows that for pro-lifers to prevail in a statewide ballot campaign, two conditions have to hold
1) The campaign must take place in a red state
2) The pro-life policy change must be incremental and difficult to caricature or demonize
