here is a story for you to stop blaming Ukraine for an upcoming food crisis: my father is a farmer in Lviv region, a Western part of Ukraine near the Polish border. he had a lot of clients abroad and his produce in large amounts was transported by the Black sea. 1/
98% of his crops were sold to third-world countries. as you probably know, we can't transport anything by the sea because Russia mined it and blocked our ports. as for now, my father has his storage units full of last year's produce and he would be happy to sell it. 2/
remember that the farm is close to the Polish border. the border is way closer than the ports are. but he can't sell it to European distributors because the process of crossing the border is costly. 3/
costly in the way that the expenses for transporting would eventually make him go bankrupt. no European company wants to organize the transportation. drivers are afraid to go here and queues for trucks on the border are horrific. sometimes the trucks are stuck for 10 days 4/
to develop this new transportation logistics my dad has to pay for the licenses for food trucks (and buy more food trucks because he wasn't responsible for the transportation before), and develop permits for drivers because men above the age of 18 can't cross the border 5/
then he has to hope for the best because he doesn't know how much time his truck will be stuck on the border and how much time customs clearance will take. by the time it arrives at the buyer, it might all be wasted. as you can see, it's all too costly and risky 6/
my dad is optimistic. but it makes him furious to hear that Europe is thinking of a solution through diplomacy with russia as if it was the only solution out there. it's not. European governments (and media!) can work on changing policies at borders with Ukraine. 7/
policies that concern food truck licenses and custom clearance. he says that there are ways to make it easier for Ukrainian trucks to cross the border but the attention of the public is not there 8/
Ukrainian farmers want and need to sell products to fill storage units with this year's harvest. instead of calling food our weapon as the Pope did or thinking that you can make a deal with the devil for your own good, look into all the possible solutions 9/
spread information wisely.
