First Delta beta w/ iPad support is here! Been super excited to work on this for a long time, & after using it for the past few weeks can confirm: iPad is by FAR the superior experience for lots of games 🙌

Best feature tho? Redesigned iPad controller skins by @1CarolineMoore :)
This beta is the equivalent of just checking the “Supports iPad” checkbox in Xcode and fixing all the obvious bugs…so basically it’s just a blown-up iPhone app at this point 😅

That being said, I’ve already started COMPLETELY redesigning Delta for iPad for a future beta 👀
Besides the (much needed) redesign, the next few betas will also add a bunch of advanced iPadOS features:

🤝 Handoff
🎮 Focus Engine
🫳 Drag & Drop
⌨️ Full keyboard support

The remaining skins will also be redesigned for iPad…but those have their own issues 🙃

This bill is a _huge_ step towards allowing sideloading on iOS, but I’m very concerned it doesn’t adequately protect consumers from the added risks

Sideloaded apps aren’t reviewed by a real person, and thus should _not_ be treated the same as App Store apps
Specifically, I don’t support sideloading directly from Safari or 3rd party App Stores — that makes it far too easy to accidentally install malware

Instead, sideloading should be as cumbersome as possible, e.g. requiring users to physically connect their phone to a Mac or PC
Additionally, sideloaded apps should be locked down even more than App Store apps — at least by default

Without human review, some iOS features can be easily abused and possibly shouldn’t be allowed at all, such as:

• Running in background
• Accessing user location

Epic v Apple verdict is in! Apple’s absolutely ridiculous App Store rule that forbids developers from linking to external payment methods is no more 🥳

(but Fortnite still isn’t allowed back in the App Store, lol)
This is basically what everyone *thought* happened when Apple settled that other lawsuit…before we read the fine print. Now Netflix can actually let users sign up in the app, and people can buy Kindle books without jumping to Safari. What a concept!
This is a great change for both users and developers — but it’s important to remember the “developers” most benefiting are the larger companies. Indie devs generally care less about the Apple Tax, and more whether Apple will even approve their app idea in the first place.

🧵 I read through Apple’s anti-sideloading document, and (unsurprisingly) I have some thoughts. It’s clear Apple’s very concerned w/ antitrust legislation, as this document is effectively just a scare-tactic predicated on some misleading information apple.com/privacy/docs/B… (1/10)
For one, this quote is already the case today! Apple doesn’t allow Delta in the App Store, which ironically forced me to build @altstoreio just to distribute it. If Apple doesn’t want users sideloading apps, it is entirely up to them to allow Delta in the App Store 🤷‍♂️ (2/10)
Apple argued in the Fortnite trial that developers are in fact allowed to let users buy virtual currencies outside their app, such as via a web browser. This means it’s *already* possible for App Store apps to sidestep “Ask to Buy,” but it hasn’t seemed to be an issue 🤔 (3/10)
