🚨 OHIO: House Republican lawmakers in Ohio passed a bill last week that would ban transgender girls & women from participating in high school & college athletics. It also comes with a “verification process” of checking the genitals of those “accused” of being trans. 🤯
Understand this: anyone could "accuse" a young girl of being trans, which would trigger an inspection of her genitals. 👀
Ohio Republicans who are claiming they want to save & protect women are putting young girls & women in this situation. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.
#OhioCanPlay
The attacks on trans girls impact ALL girls. Because you can't ban girls who are transgender unless you know which ones are trans. Lawmakers think looking in a young person's pants is a good way to figure this out.

But "protect young girls," amirite? 🙄
There was ONE TRANS GIRL participating in school sports in Ohio this year. ONE. In the whole state. That's according to Ohio State High School Athletic Association.

In fact: in the last 7 years the OSHAA has never had more than 1 trans girl in any given year.
To be clear: there are not swarms of trans athletes descending upon Ohio (or anywhere else in the country!) knocking cisgender girls out of spots - there is one young person in the entire state trying to play on their high school sports team.
While it is possible this bill will not move because the legislative session is now on pause until November, this is political signaling. It shows Ohio lawmakers are willing to use taxpayer dollars & time that could be spent making real change in the state to bully ONE KID.
Ohio already has a policy for transgender student-athletes that is among the more strict in the country, requiring high schoolers to have undergone one year of hormone therapy. Very few other states put that elite-level restriction on youth trying to play sports with friends.
Also, it's worth noting that this issue wasn't even on the schedule for Ohio lawmakers to discuss last week. But in search of ways to make it happen, desperate Republicans did a bait & switch.
Lawmakers are so set on attacking the trans community for political gain that when HB61, The ‘Save Women’s Sports Act,’ wasn’t on the schedule, Republican representatives added the language to a completely different bill, HB151, which would reduce state control in schools.
To every trans person in Ohio, I am so sorry this is happening. We know that these attacks are not really about sports, which makes this outrageous bill even more dangerous.
And to the ONE TRANS KID PLAYING SPORTS IN THE STATE, know that I will keep fighting for you. 🏳️‍⚧️❤️🥊
Ohio residents: please contact your lawmakers & tell them to LEAVE TRANS KIDS ALONE.

Yesterday I celebrated 12 years on T.
13 years ago I didn’t think I would be here today. I didn’t know this level of joy & euphoria was possible.

Gender affirming care is life saving care.

🎉
Everyone should be able to feel the joy I feel. Unfortunately, in states across the country we have seen legislative attacks on trans people, particularly youth, attempting to block us from accessing the care - medically necessary, best practice care - we need.
The goal of these bills is to keep us from being who we are - because our freedom & confidence in our sense of self feels threatening to cis people locked into a system that never fit everyone in the first place.

It's critical that journalists talk to the people directly impacted by anti-trans legislation & policies, which is why the NYT reporter was directed to me to provide my insights in what turned out to be this weekend's hit piece on trans athletes. Some thoughts:
Unfortunately, interview subjects can't control & most often have no oversight into where the pieces we are interviewed for will go. All we can do is give our perspectives from lived experiences & keep fighting for trans voices to be heard & for trans athletes to be included.
I took the opportunity to support Lia Thomas & advocate for all transgender athletes through my conversation with the author - which clearly didn't work, given the lean on the final piece. But speaking up & using my voice to support my community is part of my values.

Yesterday @NCAA announced it will allow championships to go on as scheduled in states with laws that ban transgender athletes from participating. Here’s why this is an issue (thread)

ncaa.org/about/resource…
@NCAA said it “will require all hosts to reaffirm their commitment to ensure a nondiscriminatory & safe environment for all college athletes per their host agreement.” It is impossible to do that in states with laws that ban transgender athletes.
I have lived experience of this. In 2016, I competed in a race in North Carolina shortly after HB2 was put in place. The race organizers did a good job of using inclusive language but I still had to stay in a hotel, get gas, eat & navigate the town.

🚨ALABAMA: SB10, the transgender medical ban, is on the House this week. Not only would this bill criminalize doctors who provide gender-affirming care, but it could also criminalize parents & kids who are administering medication at home (a class C felony).
SB10 also targets school administrators who provide support to trans kids, including counselors, principals, nurses, and teachers & would require that they out trans & non-binary children to their families.
If you live in, do business in, or have any relationship to Alabama, please reach out to your contacts & ask everyone to speak up about this harmful bill.

Arkansas Governor @AsaHutchinson signed the anti-trans sports bill into law today.

We've explained how harmful this is to trans athletes & all women. Here we are, with it in law. It is incredibly hurtful, but SOMETHING MUCH WORSE is still up & we need to take action RIGHT NOW ⬇️
Arkansas HB1570, the bill that would ban healthcare for trans people in Arkansas, is NOT LAW YET. We can still protect healthcare for trans kids, but we need to mobilize RIGHT NOW.
As a reminder, HB1570 would ban gender affirming health care, taking away a patient's personal treatment options & undermining the prevailing recommendations of EVERY major medical association.

🚨NORTH DAKOTA residents: HB1298 is delayed, giving you a bit of extra time to reach out to your senators TODAY & tell them to vote NO.
You can personalize a message to your senators here: act.prairieactionnd.org/letter/HB-1298…
HB 1298 bans transgender youth in North Dakota from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. This bill is discriminatory & dangerous to North Dakota's youth.
