Today at the @usmayors#MayorsDC22 meeting, @SecMayorkas highlighted the value of partnering with local mayors around the country to protect and secure our communities. 🧵
.@SecMayorkas on the cyber threat facing communities:
“Regardless of the size and sophistication of your infrastructure, you need to identify a person who can take charge of the cybersecurity portfolio because it is something that we all need to be vigilant about.”
On the need to work together to combat the threat of domestic violent extremism:
"Our goal is to be preventive—before we have to be responsive.” #MayorsDC22
As of November 10, 2021, DHS is not aware of an imminent and credible threat to a specific location in the United States.
The United States continues to face a diverse and challenging threat environment as we approach several religious holidays and associated mass gatherings that in the past have served as potential targets for acts of violence.
"We have seen the threat evolve but we have not seen its prior iterations disappear… Our work at DHS requires vigilance, throughout the day every day...
"....And our greatest asset are in fact our people, the people in the department." - @SecMayorkas
As previously announced, starting Nov 8, travelers from Mexico and Canada who are fully vaccinated for #COVID19 may enter the U.S. for non-essential travel via land and ferry ports of entry.
The timing of this change is aligned with the new international air travel system that will also be implemented in November.
Restrictions continue to apply to non-essential travelers who are not fully vaccinated.
The Homeland continues to face a diverse and challenging threat environment leading up to and following the 20th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks as well religious holidays we assess could serve as a catalyst for acts of targeted violence.
These threats include those posed by domestic terrorists, individuals and groups engaged in grievance-based violence, and those inspired or motivated by foreign terrorists and other malign foreign influences.
Today, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security @DHSMcAleenan signed a cooperative agreement regarding the examination of protection claims with the Minister of Government of Guatemala, Enrique Antonio Degenhart.
The agreement, signed at the @WhiteHouse, will fundamentally change the flow of irregular migration throughout Central & North America by enhancing protection capacity in Guatemala.
The two nations have a strong partnership, rooted in a shared commitment to advancing prosperity & economic growth in the region, & to achieving a stable and secure Central America.
