Speaking of the Russo-Ukrainian war, a number of commentators begin from the premise a nuclear power cannot lose a war. This is utter nonsense, and dangerous nonsense. 1/10
It is ritually repeated that the Cold War showed us that nuclear powers cannot be defeated. In fact, the Cold War proved the opposite. Nuclear powers lost wars all the time. 2/10
Who won the war between the (nuclear-armed) United States and North Vietnam? North Vietnam, of course. 3/10
Who won the war between the (nuclear-armed) Soviet Union and Afghanistan? Afghanistan, of course. 4/10
Related topic: the Cold War was a period of decolonization, in which colonial powers lost decisive wars to anti-colonial movements or states. Russia acts today as a colonial power. 5/10
Related generalization: in recent decades, it has more often than not been the smaller state that has defeated the larger one on the battlefield. 6/10
Nuclear powers do lose wars; big countries often do; and imperial powers will be humiliated. Historically speaking, a Ukrainian victory over Russia would not be surprising. 7/10
Misunderstandings of recent history make it harder for Ukraine to win. When we draw the wrong lessons from the past, we give ourselves an excuse for inaction in the present. 8/10
If Ukraine loses this war, it will not be because it had to lose. The Ukrainians are doing what they can, and history shows that they have a chance. 9/10
If Ukraine loses this war, it might well be because others used bad history to give themselves bad reasons to waste time during the weeks that will define the decades to come. 10/10

Russia has a hunger plan. Vladimir Putin is preparing to starve much of the developing world as the next stage in his war in Europe. 1/16
In normal times, Ukraine is a leading exporter of foodstuffs. A Russian naval blockade now prevents Ukraine from exporting grain. 2/16
If the Russian blockade continues, tens of millions of tons of food will rot in silos, and tens of millions of people in Africa and Asia will starve. 3/16
It is senseless to shelter Putin from the sense that he is losing. He will figure that out for himself, and he will act to protect himself. 1/17
Russians are not cornered. The Russian army is not cornered. It is an invading force. When defeated, units just retreat across the border to Russia. 2/17
Putin rules in virtual reality, where there is always an escape route. He cannot be cornered in Ukraine, because Ukraine is a real place. 3/17

On 19 August 1939 Stalin's Soviet Union began a new era in economic cooperation with Nazi Germany, in which Moscow would supply Berlin with oil. 1/
Four days later Berlin and Moscow signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, the secret protocol of which provided for the division of eastern Europe into spheres of influence. 2/
On 1 September 1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland, followed by its Soviet ally on 17 September 1939. 3/
