Tonight @January6thCmte will hold its first hearing on the criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, which led to violent insurrection and lasting damage to our democracy.
Few states were more central to than PA and few groups more responsible than @PAGOP.
A thread 🧵
Some toplines:
- 76 @PASenateGOP and @PAHouseGOP members signed letters asking to overturn the election
- All GOP legislative leaders signed letters
- 8 PA GOP Congressmen complied on Jan 6 and joined Texas lawsuit
- 78 Pennsylvanians have been charged by Feds for 1/6 crimes
On Jan. 6, 2022, I wrote about the need for accountability for PA Republican elected officials for their roles.
We’ve seen rightfully dozens of the rioters face life-altering consequence.
PA State Senator Doug Mastriano crossed police lines with rioters and entered restricted areas at the U.S. Capitol as the January 6th attack was happening.
He faced no consequences from GOP leaders and is now the GOP nominee for #PAGOV with a plan to sabotage our elections.
In addition to 75 other PAians charged, a Philadelphia Proud Boys leader is among five members charged by a grand jury with seditious conspiracy for their role in the attack.
We now know Mastriano was also questioned by the FBI, in addition to a subpoena from @January6thCmte
Mastriano’s role in this attack — from pre-election to Jan. 6 to everything since — is so big that’s it’s hard to scale. But @witfnews did a great job today
Mastriano used extreme rhetoric calling it a “death match”, called on extremist crowds to “rise up” and used violent Biblical and historical references to push and prod his supporters.
@PhillyInquirer had a fantastic accounting of this today as well
PA @RepScottPerry like Mastriano was central to this conspiracy.
He was featured a “Stop The Steal” rally on the PA Capitol steps while he was also plotting a coup at DOJ with Trump, then led the charge on the House floor to throw out PA’s votes. cnn.com/2021/08/12/pol…
Top GOP legislative leaders also played a big role.
They all signed the Jan. 6 letters, used taxpayer resources to push the Big Lie, and some signed onto Texas lawsuit to overturn the election.
Given *the U.S. Senate* existing in its current broken form, this is a pretty strong deal. Puts even more pressure on GOP state legislatures like PA to act.
Particularly intrigued by this. Mastriano and other pro-gun PA GOP legislators have pledged to try to block any new federal gun safety restrictions. This would likely make the list.
Very interested to see whether Mastriano comes out against this bipartisan deal. This is what he said earlier this year about *any* new federal gun safety measures. #PAGOV
It’s accountability time. #Jan6Hearings beginning now. More PA context below.
My 🧵 setting the scene for how @PAGOP engaged in this anti-American conspiracy to overturn Trump’s loss, void millions of PA votes and have kept the MAGA lies and election sabotage alive ⬇️
Meet the PA Republicans who spread Trump's lies, asked Congress to cancel PA's votes and helped sow an insurrection - and now want to be trusted with our elections.
They want us to forget what they did in 2020 but you cannot separate that from what's happening now
A thread 🧵
A refresher: PA Republicans, including every legislative leader, played a leading role in championing Trump's lies and attacks on PA's elections and election officials, and endorsed throwing out our votes, which helped sow the January 6th insurrection penncapital-star.com/election-2020/…
Rep. Seth Grove, the House GOP's 'Election Chief', who:
- sits on ALEC's board and 'election integrity' team
- organized the letter asking Congress to throw out PA's votes on Jan 6
- held a presser to amplify the Dominion conspiracy
- tried to get power to seize ballots in 2020
