"The British values of civility, dialogue & mutual respect would usually suggest a different approach to disagree or address differences with someone with whom the government has had a sustained relationship for over a decade" - @qariasim on #wato

The Imam heard about Dept's letter of dismissal from the media, then finding it online on their website. No Minister, official or adviser made any contact pre-publication, nor did they even send the senior faith leader a copy of their (unsigned, undated) letter addressed to him
A lot of people in faith and civic society say that was extremely poor behaviour by government

This critical challenge to the Imam from Archbishop Cranmer, agreeing with the govt decision, says he was treated shoddily and without respect or courtesy
archbishopcranmer.com/the-censorious…
That they could have dismissed him with more civility is not just a process point. Lack of contact affects the substance too.

Imam says letter's association with him with anti-Shia rhetoric is defamatory & inaccurate, in saying he had not challenged things he had condemned.

A new racist trope has arisen in Britain in 2022: "they should send you to Rwanda".

Here it is being directed at Labour MPs Rupa Huq and David Lammy; London Mayor Sadiq Khan (replying to tweets on completely different issues) and to Conservative Home Secretary Priti Patel. ImageImageImageImage
Sometimes both right-wingers and left-wingers) against anyone they dislike politically. Here are people saying it to Peter Bone (C) and Richard Burgon (Labour) & another saying all of the celebrities who signed a letter against the Rwanda scheme should be deported. ImageImageImage

Govt won on v.narrow grounds. Neither the court nor appeal court are deciding if the policy is lawful (that's for July). Question is whether the govt can push ahead before the lawful basis is properly tested in court, & whether the court decision was at least plausible
Core is "balance of convenience"

Without the full hearing to know the answer...
- the UK govt may deport some people unlawfully in June (find out in July)
- or (injuncted) it might be held up until July to undertake deportations that could have been lawful in June
Many of us might think "find out if its lawful before you deport" intuition looks stronger, given 1 month delay

Judge decided, if govt care deeply about the policy, they shouldn't be inconvenienced. Could ask for those deported to be sent back; hope not harmed in meantime

The Home Office has apologised in court for misreading & so mischaracterising the UNHCR advice on the dangers & shortcomings of Rwanda's asylum process; giving misleading info to those being served deportation notices.
UK govt's impact assessment shows that UNHCR v.worried about lack of professional asylum system in Rwanda. It can't cope with a tiny number of applicants, has no experience with asylum seekers from outside Africa, but UN agency offers of support ignored
Offers to train, support and build capacity in the Rwandan asylum system have not been taken up. Decisionmakers don't have the experience or training in the basics, with loads of turnover

Baroness Amos becomes one of the 24 members of the Order of the Garter today. She is the first Black Briton given this honour by a Monarch in the seven centuries of the Order.
Baroness Amos this morning told @BBCr4today that the Rwanda deportation deal is "shameful" in offloading UK responsibilities. She does not believe Prince Charles would have wanted his private views of the scheme to become public.

The court of appeal will look at tomorrow's Rwanda plan & whether it can proceed before the courts decide substantively (in July) whether the policy is lawful. The initial decision is it could, as Judge hoped anybody deported unlawfully might be brought back
The gvt has cancelled the deportation orders against most of the 37 people - as in most individual cases (torture victims, for exanple) it now accepts Rwanda scheme is not safe for them. It still hopes to deport up to a dozen people (esp those who didn't have access to a lawyer)
Govt hopes cancelling deportation orders against most of the 37 people shows it is looking case by case (ie policy is safe)

In truth, it wants to deport people who didn't have legal advice, before finding out if its policy is lawful & without establishing the oversight mechanisms

Imam Qari Asim has written to Michael Gove in response to the government's (unsigned) letter released to the media, sacking him from the appointment made in June 2019 to be one of two advisers defining anti-Muslim prejudice.
The govt published this (unsigned) letter to Imam Asim on its website last night. @QariAsim writes he had not received it personally (and still has not). He learnt of it from the Telegraph newspaper, which had been sent the letter to report on last night.
gov.uk/government/pub…
Imam Asim was not told this by the govermment. (He was told it by the newspaper, which was sent the letter, unlike the addressee).

This seems to me a shabby & discourteous way to treat a senior faith leader, whatever the merits of the decision itself.
