SSI is super exciting! Look at this crowd for “Behind closed doors: IP & Surgery “
What is the role of IP in SSI prevention? We’re about to find out. #APIC2022
Well, given the volume (up to 300k patients at risk) and cost (financial and other) SSI is important to prevent.
Despite COLO and HYST moving down, and below an SIR of 1, it hasn’t been statistically significant.
HPRO AND KPRO are above an SIR and remaining flat
In The @APIC competency model IPC rounding is called out during the IPC operations domain. Rounding in the OR is part of a well rounded IPC rounding program.
Is rounding in the 4 steps to identify and communicate SSI? No. But you’ll never know what happens in the OR if you dont
Suggestion 1: have a focused IP goal. Observe a case from start to finish and share findings.
Suggestion 2: a focused goal for surgery on SSI reduction. (Obtain a reduction of X in a specific SIR)
What’s next?
Use a standardized process for surgical observations & physical environment.
Don’t let the signage on the door intimidate you!!! You’re part of the team. Your work is vital and this is a necessary part of our IP role.
Come prepared. Be sure to study up as much as possible ahead of time.
Adding the local leaders will helpful in follow up
Adding unannounced rounds may also help seeing the ‘real’ environment.
OR rounding prep:
Be prepared
Collaborate
Wear surgical scrubs… no bunny suits
Be on time (in the room from start to finish)
Provide immediate feedback
Timely follow up
Also eat, hydrate and potty before the start of the case.
Ask questions in a non threatening way
You could use the CMS hospital infection control worksheet or the ambulatory surgery center IC surveyor worksheet.
There are also resources available on @APIC website:
Log into APIC
Go to Education/certification
Click on Upcoming webinars
Go to on demand

During Covid 20k IP related events to that PSO alone. By using pt safety data tied to surveillance data you can tell more of the story.
Link harm event data and surveillance data. #APIC2022
I’m in the pseudo clabsi outbreak presentation #APIC2022
Good review of mediports, communication when an outbreak is suspected, and what steps to take when considering whether or not bacterial isolates are ‘related’ so to speak. #apic2022
Observations in procedure area showed some opportunities including drift from standard practices.
Tim editorial:
How many of us in IP have heard or experienced this before? Reinforces the need to be in the clinical space.
I’m in “Motivational strategies for more effective change management”
Motivation for change management. One of the speakers had to go to a client hospital for a State IP Audit. Peak IP right there. Being pulled from one important thing to take care of another. #apic2022
