1/ THREAD: Body Language Analysis No. 4656: Donald Trump's Contempt while hugging the American Flag

2/ To those with Republican ideology, these images (and others taken of this moment) have been idealized and dramatically misunderstood — for the actual emotion Trump was thinking-feeling in this moment was that of Contempt.

3/ This is not simply 'the way Trump smiles'. This is a classic expression of Contempt — which he maintained during his entire time of hugging the American flag.

4/ Note the asymmetrical elevation — higher on his left — in what colloquially, many would refer to as a smirk or a snarl.

There's also nostril flaring on that same side. Trump's eyelids are also partially closed.

5/ And while partial eyelid closure is not a necessary component of the expression of this though-feeling — when present with contempt, disgust, and mild-moderate anger, partial eyelid closure serves as an amplifier of these thought-emotions.

6/ So on this (and every) Flag Day, always remember that Trump has contempt for the American Flag — or for America itself.
