This Thurs., June 16th is SD Housing Emergency Alliance’s next Tent Vigil for almost 800 houseless @SanDiegoCounty residents who died in 2020-21 per the Co. Medical Examiner. It will be on the lawn of the @SanDiegoCounty Admin. Bldg on Harbor Drive, towards Ash Street. 1/x

@SanDiegoCounty 2/x 6/16 Press Conference @ 1pm (more deets below), The Tent Vigil will be in place thru 9pm, w/ solar-powered lights inside each Tent after sunset.

The Tent Vigil is an Expression of Speech/Art Installation w/ 19 tents lettered “HOUSING NOT HANDCUFFS” & “#ENDCRIMINALIZATION”.

4/x A few days b4 #juneteenth2022 , we are centering this Tent Vigil on the disproportionately high # of Black people who are houseless in @SanDiegoCounty : 24% in the latest Annual Point in Time Count, vs. 6% of the County population.

5/x This Tent Vigil is also in solidarity w/ the Nat'l Coalition 4 the Homeless’ Nat'l Day of Action Against Sweeps #HomesNotSweeps in D.C. on June 17-18, w/ the Poor People’s Campaign, which holds its Moral March on Washington & To The Polls on June 18.

6/x We asked @SanDiegoCounty to allow this Tent Vigil Expression of Speech/Art Installation to remain overnight on June 16th in solidarity w/ this National “Sleep Out”, but were told that we would have to pay $1,500 plus the cost of a security guard to so do.

7/x If we had $1500+, we would use it to fund 15 more nights of safe Hotel Room shelter & services for medically fragile Seniors, as provided by Housing4theHomeless.org.

9/x @MayorToddGloria says Shelters r 90+% full, w/ 1.2K people per night. The last Annual Count found 2.5K Unsheltered San Diegans in the City. This Mayor’s insistence on congregate shelter as the only option 4 safe space pre-housing is nonsensical, there's not even enough!
