On June 1, #Virginia’s House & Senate passed a compromise #VaBudget. It included some positive changes, like increased funding for #K12 schools, and some harmful changes, like setting up a diversion of $$ from affordable housing and new crimes related to marijuana. 🧵 (1/
Yesterday, Gov. Youngkin proposed amendments to the compromise #VaBudget. Some are technical fixes, others are positive, but some would move #Virginia backward by reinstating damaging policies, pitting communities against each other, and weakening transportation in Virginia. (2/
First, the Gov has re-proposed suspending VA's retail gas tax for 3 months. "Savings" from this policy would end up in the pockets of the oil industry & out-of-state residents. This proposal would slash 100s of millions in funding for transportation. thecommonwealthinstitute.org/the-half-sheet… (3/
Of course, families in #Virginia are struggling with rising costs, and other tax provisions in this budget like one-time rebates and a partially refundable #EITC (#EarnedIncomeTaxCredit) will provide a direct boost to families who need relief the most. (4/
Second, the Gov is rehashing failed proposals that would unfairly hold people in jail before they have been convicted of any crime. The Gov also wants to roll back earned sentence credits that were set to begin helping Virginians on July 1. bit.ly/VoteNo32 (5/
Third, in an amendment seemingly designed to pit communities against each other, the Gov wants to cut financial aid funding for immigrant students & re-allocate some to HBCUs. The idea we can only choose 1 is false & Gov knows it: no other amendment has a pay-for embedded. (6/
Fourth, VA has 2 tax credits for certain donations to private school scholarship funds and nonprofits. Lawmakers adjusted the cap on private school tax credits to boost the other credit, but Gov wants to change back the private school cap. This $ could be for public schools. (7/
Finally, we echo other organizations in #Virginia speaking in opposition to the Gov's budget amendment that would make it more difficult for people in VA with low-incomes to access reproductive health care. (8/8)
