The situation for many Ukrainians in Austria (not all before I am reminded again of the fancy cars and no those folks are not helping their compatriots) is so bad that when you describe it at a dinner party, as I did last night, you get looked at like you must be making it up.
And that’s how the government gets away with it. Because it cannot be *that* bad surely people are not actually going hungry surely Tanja is just overly emotionally invested at this point and must be exaggerating she really should take some time off.
So I circle back to “no one can live on €215 per adult and €100 per kid while being banned from working” and then there are sad nods of the head and the subject changes before you ruin the mood in this beautiful setting after all they didn’t ask for a war on their doorstep.
Fundraising will become mega challenging. I can feel it. Those who understand what is happening give what they can. But many well off people imho have no idea what it’s like when your biggest worry is food or pair of shoes for your kid. I get those messages. I look in my closet.
Time well spent is connecting Austrians who can help with Ukrainians in need. One acquaintance has a local charity helping people in need in her town. She gives me the website. Asks me to send to Ukrainians in her area. I search my Telegram and Messenger msgs. Find a dozen. ✔️
This is my inbox this morning. 4 kids and husband is in a wheelchair. They got out of the dorm in 11th district but no money because until now they were never entitled to any (“fed”). Would anyone like to send money directly for them? DM open. I met them in person. Will do again.
