My waiting list is 25 and counting. I am going to start putting women forward and men back. Exception: handicapped, elderly. It’s interesting it used to be only women & kids, then many pensioners. Now it’s everything. You have to be fair but that also requires judgement calls. Image When demand exceeds supply and I never know when the next card is coming. Some aid organizations only help women with kids. Those in villages usually have less access to help than cities. So you shuffle envelopes a bit. Not a science. It's not scandalous an infamous FPÖ politician made an openly xenophobic comment on TV to Viennese teens.

It's not scandalous ÖVP will send a nearly all male line-up to NÖ parliament.

It's not scandalous Russia could easily bribe some Austrian MPs.

All sadly very on brand. Live a few days here as a woman who speaks German with an accent and has been helping some of the most vulnerable people navigate "the system" for nearly a year and NONE of this surprises you. People who vote for both parties know it and still keep voting. Private sector -- same.

This is so beautifully written and contains layers of nuance I have totally failed to convey (I didn’t even attempt) in my retelling of my exchanges with Ukrainian refugees. The $50 per person per month is true and it is the only official support for IDPs. There are tensions between Russian-speaking Ukrainians who sought safety in western Ukraine and felt ripped off by locals. There are heated arguments even online about which language to speak.

I’m scared to jinx it but I smell tiny baby steps of progress here as the state begins to realize many Ukrainians are here for a while. They are not prepared to blow up their broken system, but they seem prepared to s l o w l y make some tweaks. Namely: They will remove the additional step of employers having to ask AMS permission to hire Ukrainians (hopefully this will be passed into law by spring). This would mean full equal access to the labor market for those not asking for social payments.

A young Ukrainian guy with diabetes is here with his mom. They had a terrible time in Upper Austria, escaped to Wien. He has been an AMAZING help to me personally as the "admin" of my Telegram group, sharing info, managing conflicts, deleting trolls. He & his mom need a room. As in, they need a room in Wien, like, today. The budget they have from the state is €330/month but as he says you open Wilhaben or Facebook and you barely find anything on offer for €400-500/month. They were RE agents in Kyiv. They know how to search.

Y called me. When ever Y says "it's urgent", it is. We met almost a year ago at the train station. She is from Belarus, single mom of two kids. Speaks perfect German, lived here a long time. Now works for a private company offering social housing to the state(s). Works 24/7. She will "in her free time" (a mystery to me when that is) gather up baby items for a mom about to give birth, or drop off some household items, or call a guy she knows with a car to drive a washing machine or bike from A to B. That's Y. She lives and breathes her work. Anyway...

School drama continues.

Yesterday, a teary voice message from a mom whose 7yo daughter is smart, trying hard, doing well in math, yet the teacher refuses to give her daughter grades in any subject until "her German is better". Mom of 14yo boy in gymnasium (I actually helped with this school place) receives a letter he should transfer now to a middle school instead. She begs me to help. I cannot help. I explain: that's Austria. Gymnasium has no German support resources by design.

All so harsh.

I delivered a dozen more cards this morning at the arrivals center. I bought these three cards with donations I received. Now back to square one, or rather, zero. Every story is unique. They never cease to amaze me. Image Met a couple in their 50s from Melitopol (occupied early on) who have been in the arrivals center for two months (!) because they have a husky and need housing with some kind of courtyard. The dog is clearly not an apartment dog. So far, no luck. They keep hoping.

Just received a text from a mom who has been moved to a hotel in the very center of Vienna. They are "fed" 3x a day. Her child does not eat. It's mostly bread and spreads. She has no money to pack a snack for school. His birthday is coming up. She cannot make it work on €40pm. No one can make it work on €40pm, certainly not moms of young kids. She writes me "I would go back to Ukraine but I don't even have the money for that." Now I know she has nowhere to go back to; she is from occupied territory. Work? Yes, but legal ceiling is €110 + €80.

This evening many Ukrainians living in dorms/hotels where they receive no or very little money are asking me how they can get to their doctors’ appointments. Tonight a cancer patient asks. The NGO babysitters on duty in the dorms/hotels are NOT handing out single trip tickets. Stadt Wien promised there would be a solution. I would love to know what it is because at the moment there is a risk of large fine and literally no money with which to buy a subway ticket in some cases. wien.orf.at/stories/317997…

Today is Nov 1. A public holiday in Austria, also no more free public transport for 🇺🇦 refugees. Many are now like prisoners in their state accommodation. This was breakfast (for two) and lunch yesterday in one dorm. Dinner was same as lunch. Fruit? No. Snacks? No. That’s it. You might look and say it’s not so bad. But this is breakfast every day for six months. Residents across group housing (several locations) tell me the food is salty, spicy, carb heavy, they cannot eat it day in and day out. And they get €40pm pocket money if that. Some get none.

4 more cards going out today. Thank you! One to a woman whose husband just passed, another to a man born in 1939…and now I have to pause until the prize money arrives as I didn’t receive any donations yet from my appeal yesterday. One step at a time…

paypal.com/paypalme/groce… ImageImage When I send €50 cards to Ukrainians living in small Austrian villages, I first google which chain supermarkets are closest, to know which brand cards to buy. Just received funding for 2 more. Going to send Rewe cards. This little Burgenland town has only Billa and Penny. Danke!

I go to a dorm to deliver a card to an old man. I meet an elderly woman and her husband in a wheelchair from Zaporozhye. They need to get a taxi to Wien HBF. Organization on site says it cannot pay. So I order a Bolt and go with them. She cannot manage alone with these bags and the wheelchair but somehow we get here with the help of the driver. We get a train ticket to Poland for today but no seat reservation nor wheelchair service. So I leave them and now queue at another ÖBB kassa in the hope of a miracle.

As long as Ukrainians are expected to survive on €40 per month pocket money, in organized housing in Austria where they are "fed" 3x per day, the drama with the cost of everything, including public transport, will not go away.

A short story🧵 This morning I was translating for genetic testing in Europe's largest hospital for a Ukrainian woman who is 36, from Kherson (now occupied by Russia), has likely hereditary stage IV breast cancer, and is a single mother of 3 kids aged 14, 7 and 5.
