I've seen a lot of people asking questions about how @RickWarren came to address #SBC22. I don't know the whole story, but I know a little bit about it.

I was seated, waiting for the first part of the Resolutions Committee report. The Credentials Committee report was before us.
A member of the Committee on Order of Business came up to me and asked, "If @RickWarren wanted to address the Convention, would that be in order, and how would one go about that?"

"Rick's here?" I asked?
"Yes."
Well, being acquainted with Article XII of Robert's Rules of Order, I was pretty confident that Rick had the right to address the body.
And although I knew that a lot of Southern Baptists might not personally want to hear what he had to say, I'd seen them tweeting so much about due process over the preceding few days that I knew they'd be really upset with me if I didn't make Rick aware of his Article XIII rights
So, I answered that Rick had a right to address the body that that he should, if he wished to exercise those rights, inquire of the parliamentarians. Then the amendment went to a ballot vote.

I'm assuming that between then and later he did what I had advised.
Now, some of the perpetually-angry will throw a fit about this, but before you read what they say, understand this: I gave sound parliamentary advice to probably a dozen people related to declined resolutions.
I disagreed with them about their resolutions, but I helped them to understand and exercise their rights as messengers.

I disagree with @RickWarren about complementarianism and ecclesiology, but I helped him to understand and exercise his rights as a messenger.
So, I'm sure that a reasonable answer will settle the whole thing down, right?
^^There's an 'I' missing up there. Article XIII
By the way, it is my understanding that he actually WAS a registered messenger.
A brother challenged me on the “perpetually-angry” part of this, and he’s right. I apologize.

Best things about being SBC President so far. A top 10 thread, but not in any particular order:
1. Last week I went on the prayer lists of thousands of really effective prayer warriors.

2. From fellow-students with me to former-students of mine to partners in @fbcfarmersville's missions projects in the past, I've heard from so many people I've loved down through the years.
3. My high-school science teacher reached out and said that he was proud of me, which was a personal win, since I accidentally shattered a petri dish in class once by doing something stupid. Maybe I've made up for that.

I was my dad's tutor when I was twelve (or maybe it was thirteen). A brief 🧵 on Father's Day
By training, Dad was an accountant, but he spent most of his life as an entrepreneur. He changed jobs quite a bit: university comptroller -> political aide -> owner of a metal parts fabrication business -> independent sales representative -> etc. All of this with four kids.
I was oblivious to the stress that this must have caused both for him and for my mother through these job transitions.

OK, for everyone who reacted negatively to this, a few quick observations:

1. It’s no shocker to discover that the President of the Southern Baptist Convention is a [gasp] BAPTIST! Advocating for religious liberty is a core Baptist belief.
2. If you do NOT support religious liberty and you are a Southern Baptist, you are as far outside The Baptist Faith & Message as anyone in the convention, and you’ll want to be careful about calling for anyone’s ouster for straying from our beliefs.
3. If, like me, you differ with @RickWarren about complementarianism while agreeing with him about religious liberty (and that’s all I commended him about in the tweet), would you take a moment to ask yourself?…

I don't carry a weapon, concealed or otherwise. I'm about to explain why.

I also own a large number of guns, including an AR-15. I'm about to explain why.

As a bonus, I'm also going to suggest an underappreciated reason for why this topic is so divisive.

🧵
1. Why I don't have, and won't get, a concealed carry permit.

It's because some of the usual motivations don't motivate me. It's also because of some experiences I've had in life that de-motivate me.
Self-defense or defense of my loved ones doesn't motivate me. When I think about the number of people I personally know, and then about the number of them who have ever had an occasion to draw a weapon and shoot someone in self-defense, I think that this is rare.

Watching the rapid decline in my mother's health has me thinking all the more about the day, soon coming if Jesus doesn't return first, when I will be preaching her funeral. What will I say about her?

I'm not going to tweet about that tonight; I'll leave that for another day.
But as I spend a little time tonight preparing for that assignment, I can't help but ask myself what my children will say about me.
That's not normally the first thing on my mind, but for the past month I've had the strange experience of watching people who don't know me at all just make up characterizations of me, flinging things at the wall to see what will stick.

Later today I will offer my response to the Sexual Abuse Task Force's report prepared by @GuidepostGlobal. This morning, by request, I am sharing in this thread a timeline of actions I have taken with regard to the sexual abuse crises in the SBC.
1. In 2016, I proposed this resolution for the convention's consideration. It did not make it out of the committee.

praisegodbarebones.blogspot.com/2019/02/2016-p…
2. Also in 2016, at the Spring meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of SWBTS, because my mind was on this resolution that I was planning to submit and because of an ongoing scandal at Baylor University, I posed a question that was not on the agenda.
