I've been covering the #TexasSecession movement for a very long time. First I want to highlight to the rest of the country that this is a fringe of the right wing fringe in the Texas GOP and not at all reflective of the overall popular opinion of people of Texas.

So consider that as you tweet your catty remarks about how Texas should hurry up and leave. It's easy to be flippant when you don't have to deal with the consequences living in a state where fascist wishful thinking is being pushed as public policy.

How real of a threat is #TexasSecession ? Just the fact that we are having this discussion means - yeah - we got a problem. I have covered how secession is being driven by Putin. houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/…

There are plenty of useful idiots in Texas who will gladly carry the Kremlin's torch to burn the union to the ground. But why? I have asked them to explain what is the benefit and their answers are vague - "Texas for Texans" "We don't like Washington D.C. telling us what to do."

They call it #Texit and they model their #secession effort after Brexit. A big step is to get a voter referendum. Brexit was supposed to be a nonbinding referendum but it became binding once the movement got the result they wanted.

Next is to use lies and voter intimidation to push Texans to vote for #secession The first big lie is that leaving the union will be financially beneficial to everyone. "No more income tax," is a promise. But everyone in Texas will be much poorer if this somehow is passed.

So where is @GregAbbott_TX and @DanPatrick and @tedcruz and @RepChipRoy on #Texit? Why aren't they supporting it or denouncing it? They are waiting to see which way the wind is blowing. Right now they are scared that the bulk of the population of Texas will reject lunacy.

So now is not the time to be laughing at #TexasSecession This is the time to take it deadly serious and hold anyone accountable how thinks this is a reasonable idea that deserves consideration. It's not.
This is an attempt to use democracy to kill democracy.

#TexasSecession is a real threat to everyone in Texas. Civil rights, equal rights, disability rights, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, press freedom, political expression - anyone who doesn't fit their idea of an acceptable lifestyle will not find peace in this new Texas Republic.

Because #TexasSecession is a metastasize dangerous fantasy about returning Texas to a nonexistent glorious past - it's supporters don't recognize the reality of Texas demographics.
