Giving the #UPSC exam or doing anything tough or out of our comfort zone, transforms our personalities for the better. We become resilient & learn to face life fearlessly.

For this reason, here are the 10 ways the #UPSC CSE exam transforms one for the better:

A thread 🧵:
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER:

We gain immense knowledge about India & the world. From polity, economy, S&T to history, geography, security & IR.

“No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.”
L. Frank Baum
THINK & ANALYSE :

We learn to analyse every issue from multiple dimensions & reach a BALANCED conclusion-incorporating the view points of all sides fairly.

“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it’s thinking that makes what we read ours.” John Locke
WISDOM:

Knowledge isn’t enough,we need to be able to understand & discern what’s right from wrong.

“By three methods we may learn wisdom:
First, by reflection, which is noblest;
Second, by imitation, which is easiest; &
third by experience, which is the bitterest.” - Confucious
EXPRESS WELL THROUGH WORDS:

We learn to write well & express our views & convey our thoughts in a structured & simple format. Clarity & simplicity delineates our writing.

“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”
Louis L'Amour
WELCOME CHALLENGES IN LIFE:

We are faced with several trials in this arduous journey, but we learn to take them on & overcome them courageously.

“Challenge & adversity are meant to help you know who you are. Storms hit your weakness, but unlock your true strength.”
Roy Bennett
WORK UNDER PRESSURE:

With the vast competition, syllabus & the extremely low success rate in the exam, we become masters at working well under pressure. We don’t get fazed by it.

“Before you hate pressure, remind yourself that is where diamonds are made.”
Matshona Dhliwayo
EMBRACE FAILURES & PERSIST:

Multiple failures in the exam, break us & then make us. We don’t give up every-time we encounter a setback. We persist.

Temporary setbacks->Permanent growth

“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.”
Paulo Coelho
ADAPT TO UNCERTAINTY:

Undertaking this journey is inviting uncertainty into one’s life, but we learn to adapt.

“Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it,without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.”Gilda Radner
DEAL WITH JUDGEMENTAL PEOPLE:

Choosing to take a break from employment & prepare while others embark on great careers, travel, etc, invites judgement from all quarters. It doesn’t unsettle us after a point.

We become mentally strong & learn to focus on our progress & growth.
“Other people don’t get to tell you what you can have!
Someone else doesn’t get to tell you who you can be!
The world doesn’t get to decide what you can try.
You are the only one who can make that decision.”
Rachel Hollis
DREAM BIG & WORK FOR IT :

We learn to dream big & take action in order to achieve them. Trials & tribulations don’t stop us.

“Everything that is or ever was began in a dream, so don't be afraid to dream.”- Unkown

The quote by Bidemi Mark-Mordi below illustrates this point:
“They said my dreams were too insignificant to matter, & they might just be right. The thing however is,I owe it to myself to find out if they are. The only way I can do is to keep dreaming & living my dream. If in the end they are right, atleast I can tell myself I did my best.”
These were the 10 ways in which giving the #UPSC exam transforms us for the better. We enter the battlefield as one version of ourselves & leave it as a better version -& victoriously, whether we’ve cleared the exam or not.

The journey transforms us!
We learn to be & do better.

The #UPSCPrelims2022 Results were declared yesterday.Out of the nearly 11.52 lakh people who had applied for it, 13,090 have qualified for Mains. Lakhs of aspirants are disheartened as they failed to qualify.

How should we embrace failures & move forward in life?

A thread 🧵:
Despite working hard,if things didn’t work out, it’s natural to be upset. But failure isn’t the end. You just missed accomplishing a task. An exam isn’t life & it doesn’t determine your identity.

“Failure is delay,not defeat. It’s a temporary detour,not a dead-end.”Denis Waitley
If you’re planning to take another attempt: ANALYSE your mistakes, improve upon your weaknesses & speak to a mentor for the right guidance.

“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.”Sophocles

How do we increase our chances of succeeding at any task in life? What are the essential traits one needs to develop in order to clear the #UPSC exam or to accomplish any goal in life?

These are the five essential traits needed to succeed at any task in life - Thread 2:
1. LOVE what you’re doing :
Be passionate about your goal!

“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.”- Maya Angelou
2. BE OPTIMISTIC:
Look at the bright side of things & be positive. If you have got low marks in a test/failed to accomplish a task, think of how much you’ll get to learn from your mistakes & improve!

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”Oscar Wilde

We’re here with thread 3 on how to #AceTheMains in the #UPSC exam. #Upscprelims2022 was a screening test only & the marks obtained in it aren’t counted for determining the final order of merit. The real test is the Mains stage with 1750 marks. How to write a great answer?A thread
As per the 71st annual report released by #UPSC, 574980 aspirants appeared for CS(P) including IFoS(P),11474 candidates appeared in CS Mains 2019,2302 made it to the interview & finally 922 were recommended. To be one among the 2000+ candidates, your answers must stand out. How?
1. USE TIMELINES:
Whenever you’re showing a chronology of events (Eg.: independence movements or the evolution of art in GS1 or how a doctrine evolved in GS2 or how technology progressed, etc.) draw a simple timeline- showing the progression of years & associated events. Simple?

Have you ever felt unappreciated in life?Do you feel that your good work goes unrecognised? As a #UPSC aspirant,do you sometimes feel that no matter how much sincere efforts you put in(every year), a rank is the only determinant for being appreciated? How to handle this? A thread:
Quite often in life,we may feel under-appreciated,unvalued or feel that our efforts aren’t recognised in relationships, tasks that we undertake or at work. This leads to lower productivity, lower morale, decreased motivation & a sense of unhappiness. What is the antidote to this?
1.COMMUNICATE!Don’t assume. Talk about how you feel to the concerned people, seek their feedback. You’ll be surprised at how often they don’t realise that you may be feeling this way. Effective communication is the key to sorting out most issues.Speak up & listen to their POV too.

Do you ever feel under-confident in life? That you may not be ‘good enough’ to achieve a goal that you had dreamt of? As a #UPSC aspirant,do you get overwhelmed about the huge competition? With each passing attempt,is your confidence getting eroded? How to be confident? A thread:
Cambridge dictionary defines confidence as “the quality of being certain of your abilities, having trust in people, plans & the future.”We would love for certainty regarding our future, right? That we’ll clear the exam & things will go exactly as planned. But does that happen often? No
Are you uncertain about your abilities? Do you constantly doubt yourself? When you see others do well at something that you’re struggling with, do you lose confidence? The antidote? Stop comparing yourself to others. You are unique. We all have different starting points in life.
