Thank you, Consul General @MichaelPostl & the delegation, from Austria who met with me yesterday to discuss building high quality publicly owned #SocialHousing that is affordable to all people in Seattle. This is the sort of housing provided to 60% all people in Vienna. 🧵
We talked about the need for social housing as a new tool in our toolbox - especially in places like LA, SF, & Seattle, where rents have skyrocketed, displacement is rampant, & new construction of homes for working people isn't matching the pace of need.
Vienna was facing a similar problem when they started their social housing program, in 1917. Now, rents in both publicly & privately owned homes make up on average only 25% peoples' incomes in the Austrian capital, leaving them to have much more financial freedom & stability.
We also discussed work that my office is undertaking to start building out social housing that would complement our current non-profit affordable housing landscape, provide competition to the private market, & most importantly keep peoples' homes out of speculation forever.
I will continue to build this relationship with our Austrian counterparts & I look forward to using their expertise to uplift community voices calling for social housing & to meet those community demands.
We have a ways to go, BUT
1. As I've said before, high-quality public social housing is possible in the US. 2. Our friends in Vienna see promise in the programs that we discussed for Seattle.
The future is bright when we treat housing as a human right & not just as a commodity

Today, the Supreme Court disregarded 50+ yrs of precedence and achieved their perverse agenda – to violate basic human rights, take away a person’s right to choose, and force people to give birth. While this is a moment of unspeakable sorrow, we must not let it lead to despair.
One in four women in this country have had an abortion. I am one of them. And I am terrified and outraged for the many people who will need abortion care today and every day forthcoming, particularly Black and Brown folks across the country. southseattleemerald.com/2022/05/20/opi…
Our office has been working on legislation since the Supreme Court’s draft opinion was leaked to protect workers who seek abortions, regulate crisis pregnancy centers, and provide safe passage for people seeking abortion treatment and gender affirming care at clinics in our city.

These are the people whose lives were taken in the last decade by police in Seattle. Today is not just about breaking the cycle of police violence, but creating a new system of community safety that centers mental wellness, prosperity, and safety for all.
Recent events have brought into relief the depths of structural racism in our society:
- the impact of coronavirus on black communities
- the callous demeanor of a police officer as he kneels on a man’s neck, listens to him plead for his life for 8 minutes. And kills him. 1/9
- the confidence of a white woman weaponizing her tears to set up an innocent black man.
The blatant expressions of racism within *all* of our systems unleashed the fury of our black neighbors across the country, including here in Seattle. It’s a fury we should all share.
2/9
It's also a fury we should be free to express through protest. Without fear of excessive use of force by the police. Without a militarized, heavily armed force of officers being sent to engage with unarmed civilians as has been happening for days on Seattle streets. 3/9
