Very bad day in the global fight for women’s rights.
Women in the USA will still seek to end unwanted pregnancies. However safe abortion will be harder to access and disproportionately so for women with low incomes.

This is a real life consequence of an empowered religious right.

I am not in the same movement as those who deny women autonomy over their own bodies. That should never be a right that we ‘set aside’ or deprioritise.

I don’t think we can claim to fight for women’s sex based right if we stand aside when something so basic is eroded, when the step backwards is so huge.

This comes just hours after an American woman had to be airlifted out of Malta because she could not get an abortion and her life was at risk.

And look - they are making clear their intention to go for contraception and the right to have sex with and marry someone of the same sex next.

The Religious right are fundamentalists and should not be the chosen partners of feminists. We will not advance women’s rights by standing with them.

Griswold v. Connecticut - the right to use contraception in marriage
Obergefell v. Hodges - state bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional
Lawrence v. Texas - criminal punishment of sodomy is unconstitutional

Obviously overturning Roe v Wade is huge but they will not stop there and they have said so.

Meanwhile, there are those on the left who forget that women exist.

I think women’s rights need to be fought for in a left context but I acknowledge that many on the left have turned their backs on women’s rights. The right though, their whole agenda is anti-progressive.

(Imagine if we had a political party focussing around women’s sex based rights.)
