This Black African woman was gang raped. She says 'I am trying to forget about it'

@MSF paid the photographer donor money to put a net on her face and shoot her.

We are told this is 'sensitive' and 'dignified'.

Photo can now be sold as stock.

#msfexploits Image
TW (trauma) It was the image which prompted me to look at @MSF relationship with @MagnumPhotos which consists imho of exploiting their patients and telling the world how heroic each other are.

60 days later the archive is all still up. For sale. Stock thumbs grabbed today. ImageImageImageImage
Many people who have worked for MSF told me the org was incapable of doing the right thing. That MSF is cynically run and structurally racist.

Typical white guy. I did not want to believe them.

But look at the images. For sale today. Really look.

#msfexploits ImageImageImageImage
The idea that the people who have facilitated the exploitation of some of the worlds most vulnerable people can be trusted to do the right thing is dangerous.

They cannot.

It's just allowing abusers to cover up their abuse. ImageImageImageImage
.@MSF cannot even be trusted to make their own statement on this visible. It's hidden on their website and they refuse to share it on their public feeds.

Instead they spent yesterday telling the world 'our actions are guided by medical ethics'.

The word 'gaslighting' gets overused.

But here it's entirely appropriate.

The stock images do not lie. MSF taught photographers to exploit patients. To get on with a camera it was likely expected of them.

They abandoned medical ethics. ImageImageImageImage
60 days on @MSF haven't even committed to not working with agencies and photographers who have exploited their patients.

No-one at MSF, apparently, is responsible.

No-one at MSF, apparently, is accountable.

No-one knew anything. ImageImageImageImage
No investigation at all about the chain of command that allowed these images to be taken and continue to be profited from.

Or why MSF partnered with a photo agency embroiled in a child exploitation scandal. ImageImage
Nothing from @chris_lockyear MSF's Secretary General who has locked his twitter profile.

🤷‍♂️ ImageImageImageImage
One of most important functions of @MSF is to campaign for patient rights to access drugs through its @MSF_access campaign.

How does that work when people start to understand MSF are allowing their patients to be exploited?

It doesn't @chris_lockyear. ImageImageImageImage
What happens next?

I believe it's kill or cure time for @MSF

They must not be allowed to cover up the dehumanisation and exploitation of their patients.

It morally bankrupts them and destroys them from the inside. ImageImageImageImage
Good people will leave @MSF. They already have done. Just ask @DecoloniseMsf

They will not stomach being a party to the exploitation of the people they joined the organisation to serve.

Those that allowed this to happen face no consequences. And will stay. ImageImageImageImage
An independent investigation must be forced on @MSF

The fact that 60 days on from the start of this scandal one has not been announced shows either a failure to grasp the industrial scale of abuse.

Or worse. A willingness to it cover up. ImageImageImageImage
I believe the international medical community will be woken into collective action to insist on an independent review.

This cannot continue.

Voices like @DrHassaanZahid @amyaneilson @DecoloniseHlth @DecoloniseMsf @MonicaMukerjee @arnabmajumdar_ @anaupatree etc lead the way. ImageImageImageImage
FYI the day @MSF announce a independent review with the terms of that review, who is conducting it, timescales, commitment to publish it and implement than I will delete all of these images.

And the hundreds more I have.

Until then I will try and prick their conscience. ImageImageImageImage
@MSF @hmryder FYI and not unrelated to your important work. Please read through the above thread. 👆 (warning very graphic/upsetting images but necessary to understand scale of the exploitation). THANKS.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

No-one with a camera should be allowed in any @MSF space until steps have been made to ensure patient and child safety.

Adding this to the thread. Adding once again that I believe the international medical community will take a lead on this issue.

It is necessary that they do.

Adding this short thread by @puretemerity

This issue goes well beyond @MSF.

Image
Yes. This is necessary. Thank you for sharing this Muneera.

This is why @DecoloniseMsf exists. Precisely because of this.

'Saying sorry and promising to never do it again would not be good enough for Western victims and it should be the same for people everywhere else.' @KennethMSweeney

THIS

'I sensed the presence of a French colonial humanitarianism ...'

Read the quote. And thank you for sharing Hamid.

'Who is safeguarding the people being photographed?

What is going through the minds of those setting up/taking the pictures?' @JudeHabib

Such important questions. Especially in relation to safeguarding.

Do follow Jude. She does important work.
This is such an important point @kay_lay_chi is making.

I am a white man.

Why am I being heard and not the 'Black people who have been saying this for decades'?

For the anyone who had the stomach to get to the end of this thread here are the quite simple things I'm asking @MSF and all humanitarian orgs to have in place in relation to photography and child protection.

Should be a legal requirement.

I mean from the archives it's very clear that in many instances they cannot and do not.

And where they do, but end up unknowingly being sold as stock, than a kind of fraud has been committed against them (imho).

Structural racism is the right to photograph people in public spaces being extended to hospitals, but only in relation to Black suffering.
Exploitation is when the abuse of the right to confidentiality in medical spaces is commodified.
Amy Neilson is a medical Dr who has worked extensively in humanitarian contexts, including for MSF.

'The whole business model of MSF is based on selling human misery, which is a part of its colonial heritage. As long as this business model remains the same, we will continue to steal the dignity from patients in the name of funding operations.'

@DrHassaanZahid (Former MSF)

🧵 Last year @CIWEM_EPOTY got a pretty significant online kicking for promoting exploitative photography.
And at it's very worst @CIWEM_EPOTY thought it OK to promote on Instashite a photo of a traumatised woman, clearly trying to hide her face from the camera, stood in the ashes of her home that JUST burned down, killing her child.

Hit 'Like'

Death to these kinds of photo comps can't come fast enough for the people featured imho BUT 👏👏👏 to @CIWEM_EPOTY they took the kicking, which would have been extremely unpleasant, and did something positive about it. Image

'28 days ago Russia attacked my wife’s country, Ukraine.

26 days ago the family sheltered in their basement in Kyiv.

24 days ago they packed one bag each and escaped.

3 children, a grandmother, a wife and husband

marcwilson.co.uk/book-print-sal…
20 days ago they crossed the border.
1 night in Hungary.
1 night in Germany.
1 night in Switzerland.
On the move, not stopping.
I joined them in France to support them and help with visas to come to the UK, to be with us.

marcwilson.co.uk/book-print-sal…
In Paris I sat at the table at 1.30am, in the small one bed apartment, 6 of them asleep in front of me, making their visa applications, trying to work out how to wake them and tell them the grandmother was not, according to the forms, part of the family.

Yesterday @halecar2 clearly articulated that he will continue to trade and profit from August Sander NFT's irrespective of the (disputed) legality.

He was explicit about this.

Punchy.
Like many things in that world as an exercise in archiving it is beyond parody. That may change but not holding breath.

As an exercise in profiteering it could be suicidal if people decide to sue.
Hard to argue that giving it away for free is OK when a 10% kick back on all futures sales is built in.

I mean if I rob a museum and then give it all away for free I've still robbed the museum.

1. So I'm looking to bring a Ukrainian family I filmed with to the UK.

Within 12 hours of putting something on social ten different families local to me have offered their homes.

Many others offering financial support.
2. These are all families within a few streets of my house. There is a huge amount of compassion and goodwill out there.

But the government created a hostile environment for those coming to the uk.

Their words not mine.
3. There is much to be applauded about the new scheme but turning around a bureaucracy meant to create harm into one that is welcoming is too much.

End result. When people need us the most. When huge numbers here are ready to help. They will be let down.

How can any photographer who cares about the artform/artists rights collaborate with @fellowshiptrust until they address this?

Gregory Halpern (@G_Halpy) in particular your silence is troubling (to put it mildly)
Ten days after the images were removed from Opensea @fellowshiptrust still are promoting the 10k August Sander drop on their twitter header ... leading to 'This Page Is Lost'.

Reminder. The sale generated over $1000000.

10 days.
It's not clear why @opensea removed the images because @fellowshiptrust refuse to answer the question.

But it is true the estate was sold in 1992 to Cultural Foundation of the Stadtsparkasse Cologne, by Gerd Sander.

For preservation.

In the absence of honest answers I'm left thinking that the 10000 August Sander images marketed and/or sold by @halecar2 @G_Halpy @fellowshiptrust have been removed from @opensea cause they never had the right to sell them in the first place.

Tell me that's not true @halecar2?
I say that because they've had a week to answer the very simple question

'Why have the photos been removed?'.

Refusing to answer that question shows a lack of integrity.
I mean if the answer is not very bad then why would you not offer an explanation?

If the answer is bad a basic level of integrity,
requires fronting up and explaining.
