When Clarence Thomas was nominated for the Supreme Court in 1991, Black feminists were some of the only people who were willing to publicly stand with Anita Hill. They were some of the only Black people who were willing to critique Thomas publicly.
African American Women in Defense of Ourselves purchased a full pg ad in the NYTimes. Dozens of Black women signed their names to it.
Many of those Black women were sent dozens of death threats from Black men + Black women who said they “didn’t play” about protecting Black men.
You can imagine, many of those Black women academics, activists, and students, never spoke out publicly again. In protecting Black people, they were not protected by the Black community in the U.S.
Being Black doesn’t morally insulate us from the ethical and political poison drilled into all of us via white supremacy.
To this day, Anita Hill has a basement full of hate mail sent to her by Black folks of all genders, not to mention white folks and countless other races.
For me, this story is a cautionary tale about the danger of threatening real life Black people I have access to, in defense of wealthy celebrities.
As I recover from the #lupus flareup which led to a 7 day hospitalization a week ago, my specialists want me to do some low-impact exercise in order to regain my lost muscle.
If you want to help me get a used bike from Craigslist, that would be dope.
I can’t afford my dream bike, a @salsacycles Journeyer GRX 810 650B right now. But I figure while I save, a Craigslist bike could really fill the gap.
I applied for the #BikePackingRoots BIPOC grant this year, and I didn’t get it. But there is always next year! 💕
Some folks messaged me last night and asked for my cash app, please find my link below. Thank you to everyone who has donated towards my #lupus recovery fund. You have no idea how much this means 🙏🏿
Some folks said PayPal is more accessible, so the link is below. As I continue on this journey to recovering from a #lupus flare that began with a 10 day hospitalization in February and a 7 day hospitalization 2 weeks ago. I’m deeply grateful for ya’ll.
Eek! i went to @TreadBikeShop today to look at bikes and they have my dream bike the @salsacycles Journeyer in 51cm 💕.
It’s all good though, I was able to use ya’lls donations towards a 2015 Trek Lexa SL. With the money left over I was able to pay @TreadBikeShop to assess it for safety. I was also able to get lights, front end caliper breaks + a helmet!
Thank you so much everyone 🙏🏿.
At this point, any additional money donated is going towards my prescription costs ($200-$300/monthly) + copays + deductibles.
I’ve been at @nyulangone emergency room since 8pm yesterday. Since 2am this morning my pain has been at a 9 out of 10.
I have been asking the doctors for hours to please follow the pain regiment in my chart and they won’t listen to me.
I begged Dr. Lowe the attending to please follow my care plan. I told him I am empathetic to why doctors are afraid of pain mgmt and I asked him to call the pain mgmt specialists.
They come, and I explain everything to the specialists for 40min.
Instead, the pain mgmt doctor leaves and prescribes Tylenol.
I’ve been crying and crying for hours. I’ve been hitting the bell.
The only people at @nyulangone who’ve tried to help me are other patients and the care tech.
