🧵 Repeating some COVID facts ppl keep forgetting/ignoring:
- New variants much more contagious than origin strain
- Vaccines & boosters less effective for new variants
- Vaccine & booster immunity wanes over time
- Vaccine focus on preventing severe acute symptoms
- COVID Vaccines do not prevent transmission: you are still similarly contagious
- Asymptomatic infections also contagious
- Even CDC which has been minimizing everything admits ~20% COVID patients get #LongCOVID
- You can get #LongCOVID even if asymptomatic acute infection
- Cloth masks are fairly useless. Surgical masks are better. N95 masks are v good.
- Disposable N95 masks can be safely reused w appropriate care
- You can get COVID infections outdoors
- COVID doesn’t stop if you take masks off for photos or eating/drinking in public
- #COVIDIsAirborne which means virus particles can linger in air for hours
- If you’re unmasked or wearing a bad quality mask you can inhale COVID particles in an empty room that was recently occupied by someone COVID+ not wearing a good quality mask
- The 6 ft rule was based on outdated data from the 1930s & assumed COVID was not airborne but #COVIDIsAirborne
- Physical distancing still good idea but being distanced & unmasked esp indoors not safe
- rapid tests have more false negatives for new variants
- do not rely on rapid tests to decide to not wear a mask
- rapid tests still a good idea if you’re exposed. I do one anytime I have had to be in a crowded indoor space like a medical clinic
Use layered precautions aka Swiss Cheese model:
- wear good quality masks - N95 or better - indoors & outdoors (esp in crowded spaces)
- stay up to date w vaccine boosters
- avoid large gatherings. avoid small ones too esp w ppl not being careful
- avoid nonessential travel

Something that really bugs me is how much Islamophobia has changed how Muslims discuss certain issues even w/in the Muslim community. We need to find a way to not let Islamophobes frame things while also fending them off.
A small example is how so many Muslims have started using “Sharia law” as a term when Islamic education usually makes a strong distinction b/w fiqh & sharia. & pre colonial times, Islamic courts didn’t use strictly codified laws.
An unfortunately big example is how discussion of misogyny w/in the community is seen as “you’re helping Islamophobes”

I’m sure other ppl have written extensively abt this but it’s just hitting me that the whole idea of professionalism is just incompatible w being ND. Like not even talking abt sexist/racist norms but things like small talk & likeability…
Bc ultimately it requires masking. & not that social situations don’t have these issues but at work they impact whether you can pay rent…
I used to say growing up that I had a really hard time being more than one person & I usually meant that for things like how ppl perform piety in religious spaces & how I couldn’t handle that…

not point of this tweet but given I think abt this constantly & w a backgrd in contamination control, in case it helps anyone I personally ask for in person appts to be first appt of day. Even better if it’s after the weekend….
A lot of medical clinics think I’m trying to avoid crowds but what I’m actually trying to do is allow time for the limited ventilation outpatient clinics have to do their job overnight. Airborne virus = lingers for hours = giving hours for ventilation & filtration to happen
This will be cost prohibitive for many ppl but I also bring an extra N95 mask & insist whoever is in exam room w me for extended time wear one. Often clinics have them but don’t use them & will get their own when I offer one to them.

Y’Allah. I’m so done w promo of COVID unsafe events by *disability* orgs. Tried to attend online event promoted by a disability justice education group I’m in. Start of event mentions they’re part of a hybrid festival that incl in person “large concerts” but req vaxx + mask…
Like ok the org that suggested we attend this event is the same one that organized the picnic that had me canceling my membership. But this email is on a separate list for ppl new to disability justice activism. I wasn’t planning to attend mtgs but event sounded interesting…
Anyway in what universe is it 2 yrs into the pandemic & now ppl who support disability justice are partnering w orgs doing *large concerts* in person. But festival is hybrid so ppl can “attend in a way that feels good & safe”…

Life as a disabled person is an endless series of forms to ask for your rights.

Like I’ve exp other forms of discrimination: misogyny, racism, Islamophobia.

Never quite this much paperwork tho. Tho I suppose when I was younger my parents did the paperwork.
As a side note, paperwork hurts my desi soul. My grandma doesn’t even have a birth certificate. We don’t actually know what year she was even born. I’ll never get used to white ppl paperwork obsession.
White ppl are so obsessed w paperwork we had to submit info abt my grandparents when my fam immigrated to Canada even tho not applying to bring grandparents over. Info that had to be invented in the first place bc no one kept records when they were born.

So I was giving the benefit of the doubt to the org I asked yday. Their event has no captions. Not even autocaptions. Told me to use Google Chrome for autocaptions. Which doesn’t work on mobile devices. Which I use bc of POTS which is the topic of conf. 🙃
this is not the first time this has happened. They’ve had videos on Vimeo w/o captions before finally uploading to YT w autocaptions months after I asked abt it.
Oh & it’s Dysautonomia Intl. They have paid staff & revenues of more than $1M per year per their tax filings. But I had to remind them that Title III of the ADA applies to them for providing accessible public events.
