The true story of the UK's vaccine rollout is hiding in plain sight:

1. In 2020 the UK approved and procured 40M doses of Pfizer and 100M of AZ all under EU rules.

2. From 7th December 2020 until 7th April 21, the UK did indeed have the fastest rollout in Europe.

But then...
...on 7th April 2021, after 79 AZ recipients experienced rare blood clots, the JCVI recommended alternatives to AZ should be given to under-30's (soon updated to "under-40's).

But we had already vaccinated most over-40s and already used up most of our Pfizer.

Uh-oh...
In a state of extreme panic HMG rapidly (28th April) ordered another 60M doses from Pfizer - money no object - to fill the gap created by the AZ doses becoming effectively unusable overnight.

BUT PFIZER COULD NOT DELIVER UNTIL SEPTEMBER!!!

gov.uk/government/new…
This was potentially hugely embarassing for HMG and for Brexit:

a) The Great British vaccine, AZ, was effectively contraindicated, leaving us dependent on EU Pfizer.

b) The 60M doses procured now under Brexit rules were going to take 5 months, whereas had we been part of...
the EU procurement deal extra doses would have been redirected our way instantly.

c) The reason we approved Pfizer and AZ faster than the EU initially was we took a gamble on safety and gave a waiver on liability. The AZ blood clot thing shone a very harsh light on all that.
So then in early April 21 HMG levelled with the population, saying " Sorry. We cocked up. We ordered a load of AZ; we gambled and lost. We have ordered 60M extra Pfizer but, because of Brexit, it will take 5 months."

Only kidding - did they heck!

Instead, they...
slammed the brakes on first doses rollout, (look at the graph of first doses; see if you can spot the wherls coming off with the 7th April AZ decision 😉 ) and desperately tried to eek out the remaining Pfizer from the 40M we had ordered back in 2020 while still under EU rules.
Adopting the Tory philosophy of "lie first and hope nobody notices" our vaccine rollout was slowed to a crawl and soon we were overtaken by Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Ireland, Denmark etc.

The graph for teens over this period shows in Britain, Science is based on policy.
Summing up:
1. Brexit had NO bearing on our early vaccine rollout; it was approved and procured under EU rules.

2. Brexit massively DELAYED our vaccine rollout after AZ became contraindicated for under 40's.

3. These facts have not only been concealed by Gov and media alike
but in true 1984 fashion the truth has been completely reversed - we don't just have a lie we have an inversion of the truth, where:

1. We have "the fastest rollout in the World" (one of the slowest among similar countries actually)

2.Made possible by Brexit
(initial..

2.
fast vaccine orders made possible by EU rules, later delays to rollout *caused* by brexit actually)

And, what is truly tragic, is the big lie, through constant repetition has actually gained traction.

God help us all; noboby else will.

End.

This is interesting...

What Cummings is really saying here is "Remain lost because they didn't fight dirty... and will lose in future because they don't know how to fight dirty. Unlike dirty Dom Cummings, no crime too heinous no task too dirty."

1/
When Dirty Dom uses the phrase "practical politics" what he *means* is; lying, illegal spending, illicit data-scraping & illegal psy-ops, fear-mongering, race-baiting, intimidation, corruption and miscellaneous skullduggery: obeying the rules is for mugs

2/
It is as if Lance Armstrong was now immensely proud of his clever drugs-doping and contemptuous of the mugs who try to "do it clean".

One tempting answer is for progressives to learn how to fight just as dirty as the Dirty Doms - but it is a dead end.

Hey @Keir_Starmer

Next PMQ's tell Johnson: "Britain needs a PM who has conviction, not one who has *a* conviction."
We need a PM with public service record, not a criminal record.
A serious politician, not a fun loving criminal.

(I'm on a roll)

@RhonddaBryant

"Zombie" lies: a lie that has been debunked over and over, but the PM keeps reanimating its rotting corpse.

Top of my list: "brexit made possible the best vaccine rollout in the world"

1. It was the second WORST rollout in Western Europe.

1/ Image
Our rollout was briefly about 4 weeks ahead of the EU (and 8 weeks behind Israel and UAE), while it involved mainly Pfizer vaccine, developed by BioNTech in Germany with German & EU funding, made in Belgium, procured and approved under EU rules before we left the SM.

2/ Image
But then, immediately after leaving the SM, ( ie Brexit actually commencing) the Government chose to "bet the farm" on the AZ vaccine.

Unfortunately, the AZ horse fell at the 3rd fence: in early April 2021, it became apparent that the AZ vaccine was risky for under-40's

This is dreadfully weak stuff from @iainmartin1 ; a mixture of cakeism and zombie lies. ("Zombie lie": a lie that has been killed over and over again but still shuffles around with outstretched arms and low moans)

Zombie lies first:
1. "Brexit helped vaccine rollout".

1/
This is a lie in 3 parts.
Part 1: "Brexit made early rollout possible". Not true. And debunked by fullfact fullfact.org/health/coronav… and the BBC bbc.co.uk/news/55163730
and the MHRA who licensed it gov.uk/government/new…
and Channel 4 fact check channel4.com/news/factcheck…

2/
Vax lie, part 2: We weren't even the fastest (China June '20, Russia in Aug, UAE in Sept, Australia in Oct).

And we are not the highest. Compared to similar (non Eastern Bloc) EU countries we are currently just one place above worst.

For a few short weeks we held a lead..

@campbellclaret @UKLabour The rightwing media like the Mail and the BBC News will slaughter them if they say "rejoin the SM".

My line would be "we are not going to rejoin the SM, but we ARE going to:

1. NOT have regulatory divergence for divergence sake - the benefits must outweigh the harms.
@campbellclaret @UKLabour 2. We will...
...Consult with UK stakeholders and find practical measures to minimise the damage caused by Boris' Botched Brexit, by reducing Brex tape and friction.

3. We will collaborate with the EU on scientific research, but as a 3rd country not a member.
@campbellclaret @UKLabour 4.We will fix the holiday disruptions and empty shelves.

Brexit has happened, and it was a generational decision; perhaps a future generation will rejoin, but ours now has to make brexit work.

The Tories, with their purist dogma are making Brexit infinitely more damaging

According to ofgem, 2.46% of a Gas bill is E&SO cost, vs. 25.48% of an Electricity bill.

Meaning subsidies for Wind and PV are mostly added on to Electricity bills, not Gas.

Which is a funny way of incentivising a switch from dirty gas to clean electricity, really...
To illustrate:

An average dwelling needs about 10,000kWh per year of heat. That's about 12,000kWh of gas with a typical boiler or 2,850kWh of Electricity with a modern Heat Pump.

With gas @ 7p/kWh and elec at 29p it means £840/yr boiler vs £825 Heat Pump. Meh.

However...
If gas was carrying the 25% and Electricity had the 2.5% it would be 10p/kWh for gas and 21p for Elec.

£1200 vs £600.

Now that IS an incentive.
