I'm running against an Anti-Choice Dem here in MA. People are always surprised when we say this at the doors, so let’s set the record straight. Here is a thread on how he voted when the main provisions of ROE were introduced in MA in 2020. 🧵#mapoli
Here is the initial vote on the amendment with the articles of ROE. You can see his name highlighted in the top left and the Republican votes in the bottom right. malegislature.gov/Journal/House/…
Then when governor baker introduced harmful amendments which put patients at risk and limited access, my opponent voted for each one while most other democrats stood against them. malegislature.gov/Journal/House/…
Finally, when Baker vetoed ROE, my opponent was one of only 16 democrats to vote AGAINST overriding this veto. malegislature.gov/Journal/House/…
He has also co-sponsored “poison pill” legislation that masks attempts to guilt patients and further complicate a moment for them already filled with stress & trauma. You can see the legislation here and see that he is one of the bill’s first petitioners. malegislature.gov/Bills/188/H1565
If you’re wondering why we say local elections matter, this is why. Overriding that veto required a ⅔ majority: since my opponent voted with republicans, we were only able to codify our strong abortion laws by a handful of votes.
In the State House I will advocate to make MA a safe haven to people in need of abortion care from other states, to break down racial, economic, and geographic barriers to reproductive healthcare, and to act against misinformation campaigns like PCCs.
As we move beyond ROE in MA, we can't afford to have democrats in our legislature voting against such a critical matter of public health, privacy, and autonomy. A pro-choice state deserves a pro-choice legislature.
