BREAKING: At 3:55 p.m., Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson said that voters who registered to vote on May 31, 2022, are NOT in the poll books in today's congressional runoff elections and must vote affidavit.

We learned this just three hours before polls close (7 p.m.) on a day when there are three important GOP primary runoffs—including two that could see incumbents lose re-election.

Voting information is here: mississippifreepress.org/25207/mississi…

Here's why it's significant that voters who registered on May 31 aren't in the poll books in today's runoffs:

Mississippi requires you to register 30 days before an election in order to vote.

May 31 was the deadline. They should be in the books.mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
If you have to vote affidavit in today's #MSelex runoffs, make sure you follow up with your local circuit clerk after the election to confirm that you vote was counted.
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
The Mississippi Secretary of State should be providing more information on how and why this happened soon. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson released a statement explaining why voters who registered on May 31 weren't included in the poll books.

@MississippiSOS's statements says that the issue affected 187 voters. See next tweets.👇🏻mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson says the 187 voters whose names were not in the poll books due to the error include:

-45 in Congressional District 2
-68 in Congressional District 3
-74 in Congressional District 4

He says they were still allowed to vote affidavit.
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson says the State Election Management System auto sets the deadline in accordance with state law (30 days before an election).

But this year, that was May 30—Memorial Day. So the deadline was Tuesday, May 31 instead. SEMS set it for the 30th anyway.
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
"According to Mississippi Election Code, when the voter registration deadline falls on a Sunday or holiday, the voter registration deadline should be moved to the following business day, which would have been May 31, 2022," Watson says.
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "Unfortunately, our office inadvertently missed correcting the date in SEMS and did not become aware of the error until a Circuit Clerk reported it this afternoon."
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "Due to the oversight, voters who have an effective voter registration date of May 31, 2022, would not appear in the pollbook at their precinct. This includes anyone who registered in person, postmarked a mail-in registration application..."
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "Local election officials will review affidavit ballots and accept all with an effective voter registration date on or before May 31, 2022."mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "While those impacted were still allowed to vote, the experience was not quite the same, and for that, we sincerely apologize."mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "This is the first time this problem has occurred, and our team already has logistics in place to prevent this issue from occurring in the future."
mississippifreepress.org/25231/voters-w…
Watson: "Voter confidence is of the utmost importance to me, and we will continue to work hard to remain the primary resource for trusted election information in Mississippi."

NEW: A 12-year-old child victim of rape and incest should be forced to carry and birth her father's child, Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn says.

Even in such cases, he opposes abortion exceptions.

"Every life is valuable," Gunn said.
mississippifreepress.org/25273/12-year-…
“What about the case of a 12-year-old girl molested by her father or uncle?” AP reporter @EWagsterPettus asked Gunn. “...Do you think the Legislature should revisit that?”

“Personally, no. I do not,” Gunn said. “I believe life begins at conception."

“So that 12-year-old child molested by her family members should carry that pregnancy to term?” asked Daily Journal reporter @TaylorVanceDJ.

“That is my personal belief. I believe life begins at conception,” Gunn said.

JUST IN: Mississippi Republicans nominated Brian Flowers, who accuses U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson of "treason," to run against him in #MS02.

Thompson is chair of the #January6thCommittee; Flowers claims the insurrectionists are "political prisoners."
mississippifreepress.org/25252/brian-fl…
Brian Flowers claims Rep. Bennie Thompson is providing “treasonous assistance” to support an "immigrant invasion."

Flowers says he will "work with the growing remnant of patriots ... to stop the invasion and the treason in a Constitutional manner.”
mississippifreepress.org/25252/brian-fl…
Even as Flowers says Rep. Bennie Thompson may be guilty of treason, he accuses him of “trying to intimidate American patriots by persecuting hundreds of protestors that are being held as political prisoners since approximately January 6, 2021.”

JUST IN: Trump-allied Republicans hoped Michael Cassidy would defeat incumbent GOP Rep. Michael Guest, who voted to investigate January 6th, in the #MS03 GOP runoff.

Cassidy came out on top in the June 7 primary. But tonight, Guest crushed him 67%-33%.
mississippifreepress.org/25247/rep-gues…
As @nickjudin reports in this story tonight, Michael Cassidy had initially campaign on Medicare 4 All, five years of maternity leave and trillions in social spending.

But Cassidy disavowed those policies after coming out on top in the June 7 GOP primary.
mississippifreepress.org/25247/rep-gues…
Just before the election, Cassidy claimed Guest was “coordinating with Democrats to rig the run-off election this Tuesday."

He accused GOP Chairman David Carter of meeting with Democrats to encourage them to vote for Guest in the GOP runoff.

JUST IN: Mike Ezell has defeated six-term Congressman Steven Palazzo in Mississippi's 4th Congressional District GOP runoff.

Palazzo, who first won by defeating Democrat Gene Taylor in the 2010 Tea Party wave, is the subject of an ethics probe. #MS04

Mike Ezell is the sheriff of Jackson County and has served in law enforcement for 42 years.

In his campaign, he cited the ethics probe into Palazzo's campaign finances and Palazzo's reputation as "No-Show Palazzo" for avoiding debates and town halls.
mississippifreepress.org/25244/mike-eze…
With about 89% of the vote in, Mike Ezell led incumbent Steven Palazzo in tonight's GOP runoff by about 54%-46%.

NEW: On his website, Mississippi GOP Congressional Candidate Michael Cassidy's platform called for Medicare For All, 5 years of paid maternity leave, $20,000 for newlyweds & $250-$500/month per child.

He disavowed all of it in an interview with @nickjudin.mississippifreepress.org/25171/gop-cand…
“That was a rough draft,” Cassidy said of the health care policy proposal that was on his campaign site for months. “To call it a plan of mine is a mischaracterization... It was never a plan, I never campaigned on it, and it was not Medicare For All.”
mississippifreepress.org/25171/gop-cand…
Cassidy’s website also said a “doctrine of equity has infected health systems across the nation, and some of these providers have refused to give treatment to white Americans simply due to their race.”

He says he thinks it was about COVID-19 treatments.
