Austria chooses not to make it possible to survive as an asylum seeker here. Ukrainians on state support fall under this legal category. They are essentially banned from paid work if they receive free housing. Total madness and apparently no political will to change.
The entire response to the Ukraine refugee crisis has to be seen in the context of the inherent racism behind Austria's asylum policy: designed on purpose to be nothing more than bed/bath/bread, the ban on legal work is intended to send a message to Muslim men: do not come here.
Except now white Ukrainian women and kids are falling under this legislation, so the government is like oh maybe we could change it, and then voices such as the one mentioned by Lukas (name isn't important imho) say no because then we would have to treat everyone better. No go.
And yet volunteers and others keep putting Ukrainians fleeing war zones on buses to Austria, telling them someone is waiting here. But the truth is, no one is waiting here. You cannot provide for your family on €215 per adult per month, €100 per kid. They want to work: cannot.
Two Svetlanas wrote me yesterday: we want to work on farms. But they live in a dorm. The moment they get a paid job they will lose the roof over their heads and the €215. So what will they do? Those who can go home will do that eventually. But many have nowhere to return to.
The legislation theoretically needed to fix things wouldn't be that complicated. One-time payment now of like €500 to each Ukrainian. Lift the income limit much higher (why would you ever ban legal work?). Increase monthly payments to those who cannot work. Add child benefit.
But since Ukrainians and all other asylum seekers cannot vote, probably nothing will change. The private sector will continue to jump in, although alarm bells from major charities re food, Tanja and Mario delivering supermarket gift cards. The roof is collapsing and no one cares.
A male pensioner met a female pensioner at a charity office and she told him about the Hofer cards so he got one too and now she is sending me his photo to say thanks ❤️
Hofer!
Сьогодні придбали товари на 50€.
Діти просто щасливі. Це справді дуже цінна допомога!
I have just seen photos of rats and maggots near the rubbish bins next to a former motel in deep countryside NÖ where 20 Ukrainians are sharing 1 fridge and were told the rats cannot be exterminated. Something like 48 Ukrainians living there. Who does one call to report this?!
Ok here are the photos. 48 Ukrainians sharing one kitchen with kids. It sounds absolutely awful. I will give the location by DM to those who can help. Spoke with a mom dumped in this rural NÖ motel by Red Cross from Arena Nova last week Monday. Only got money for food on Friday.
She is begging to leave and go live with her friend who is in a school in Tulln in better conditions. They are told to wait for paperwork. No one has come to see them in this hotel yet from the big charities. The food money is paid out by the local owner. They are all in shock.
The residents of the dorm in Vienna’s 11th district, most of which are handicapped, are telling me they did not get to eat lunch for two days in a row, and when they complained, they were told they can leave if they don’t like it.
No Ukrainian should be going hungry in Austria.
@Stadt_Wien please look into the folks running this place. I have heard from several residents the food is still bad and there isn’t enough for everyone at lunch. @steffi_krisper maybe you can help too as Neos in government in Wien? All info per DM (open).
This is the same place where I posted the horrible food photos a few months back and then everyone got upset and then the food got better, briefly, and now it seems things are deteriorating again. They tell me they get some fruit but only little slices. Running out of lunch?!?
It’s as hot as the Sahara and I would love to be swimming in the Danube right now but I’m doing this instead because I can’t in good conscience relax after hearing such stories. Thank you all for making this financially possible.
...I need help all the money I had left I sent to my family trying to leave Ukraine
...I am deaf and here with my 2 daughters but I can text
...I had an operation and another one is upcoming and I really need to eat special diet but I have no money
Sunday morning.
When you have to tell a young woman in a wheelchair who will not be getting a job anytime soon in Austria for obvious reasons that you cannot send a second card because no one gets a second card and you know she doesn't receive any state money bc she is "fed". Ugh. It's so hard.
I have been flooded with requests from a huge dorm in Wien. One Ukrainian mom writes "the administration hung up a sign about your program". The dorm is run by the Red Cross. So Tanja & Mario & private donors can help feed Ukrainians, but the Red Cross cannot. Speechless.
