Hey, #NCVoters it's time to let your voices be heard! 🗣 @NCSBE is taking public comments until July 5th on a proposed rule that would change the way absentee ballots are verified. Let's talk about this proposed rule and why it's important - a 🧵
#ICYMI - The NC GOP has petitioned the State Board of Elections to implement a policy allowing counties to scrutinize absentee ballot request forms. 🔎
As part of this process, the county board of elections would have to compare the signature on your absentee ballot envelope or request form with your original voter registration documents. If the signatures don't match, your ballot will not be counted. ✍️
Let's keep in mind that signatures can change over time due to certain circumstances or even disabilities, someone's signature in 2022 may not look the same as their signature from years ago.
North Carolina currently has procedures in place to verify voter identification. NC law currently requires absentee voters to verify their identities by having two witnesses or a notary witness their ballot.
In terms of absentee voting, North Carolina sets some of the highest standards. It is only one of three states that require two witnesses or a notary. There are only 12 states that require at least one witness and a notary.
This proposed rule would add another layer to absentee voting. Evidence has repeatedly shown that North Carolina has a fair, transparent, and safe absentee voting process.
People with disabilities, such as arthritis, or other illnesses that affect their signatures would be negatively affected by this process. Research has also shown that mail-in ballots from black voters and young voters are more likely to have their signatures rejected.
