With another Scottish independence referendum just around the corner I thought I'd write a thread on what was pushed last time by the 'better together' side, just to remind everyone of the tactics employed.
1. "Scots will be worse off by £1,500 per household per annum." The Times wrote back in April of this year that UK households will be worse off by £2,300 with a further £1,500 predicted. I know inflation has alot to do with it, but amongst the worst rises on the continent.
2. "Scotland can't join NATO if it doesn't host nuclear weapons" multiple nations in NATO have dispensation not to host Nukes. & It looks like a relatively straightforward process given it took 🇸🇪& 🇫🇮 about 4 months to join. Neither of whom have nuclear weapons.
3. "The only certain way that Scotland can stay in the EU, is by staying part of the UK" I don't think I need to go into any detail on this one.
4. "Scotland will lose out on domestic & international trade" Interesting then that the most successful part of the UK at the moment trade wise is NI, long touted as the most dependant part of the UK. Because it is able to trade more freely with the EU.
5. "What currency will Scotland use" if we intend to rejoin the EU probably the Euro, which I'm fine with. The pound is currently circling the drain anyway. And I see a global shift away from FIAT currencies shortly anyway.
6. "What about my state pension?" UK has amongst the worst state pensions in the western world, if Scotland gets independence this should be one of the first aims, to bring it in line with most EU countries. Certainly shouldn't be hard to beat UK state pension levels.
7. "We'll move to a more Federal system (Labour)" that's all very well, but it relies on Labour being voted into power, which is unlikely given alot of constituencies in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 would vote for a cabbage if you put a blue rosette on it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 vote also rarely (if ever) sways GE outcome.
8. New one "£10-20m is too much to spend on #indyref2 " All I'll say is you won't hear the same people quoting this, criticising queen for overspending by £15m last year (about the same it cost to bail out Prince.Andy) & due another £30m additional taxpayers money over next 2 yrs
Brexit has changed the game, the UK is fast turning into an irrelevant little island which has demonstrated that it will hamstring itself in order to keep desperate foreigners out. It's not a country I'm proud to live in which is why I'll vote yes for #ScottishIndependence2023
