I guess some don’t believe in forgiveness, reconciliation and rehabilitation. “How many times should we forgive? 7 times?” “Nah,”Jesus said, “7 times 70”. In the land of the free, we lock up more people than any country on Earth and we’re not safer for it.
Earned sentence credits (ESC) provide incentives for people incarcerated to truly come out better people by going through substance abuse treatment, job training and trades attainment, mental health treatment and a host of programs recommended by their counselors inside.
On top of that, to earn the credits (ESC) they have to stay infraction free in most cases for years to earn the credits. By the way, any incident can cost them the credits they earn. So it keeps the place safer for everyone especially the corrections professionals.
Today, due to a bill that increased ESC a lot of folks are going home a little sooner because they did the right thing inside and made themselves better people and are ready to come home to their families and society ready to contribute. That’s our prayer.
However, due to a budget amendment by @GovernorVA about 500 other men and women were excluded.I know it’s politics. They will all be coming home but bc of this change they will have to wait a little longer. I pray that their families and loved ones will help them stay motivated.
We will continue to fight for a system that is fair and keeps us all safe without having to make mockery of the phrase “land of the free” by locking up more citizens than anywhere else in the world. I pray @GovernorVA and I can work together to reduce incarceration rates in VA.
