Don't limit yourself to a single method of intervention!
I perform endoscopy, open, laparoscopic, robotic assisted surgery.
This allowed me to ramp up my practice, as I was able to offer various services to my patients and not refer them.

Try to schedule same types of cases in a day. For example multiple laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
You will get quicker as the day goes on, this builds muscle memory for you, makes your team more efficient.

Circle back with the referring doctor to thank them for sending you the patient.
Answer any questions they might have.
Make them feel appreciated.
This has singlehandedly skyrocketed the referrals for me.

Don't be afraid of introducing new technology.
For example, when I started, no one used ICG at my hospital.
Now it's ubiquitous through out the hospital...word gets around that Dr.Shamim was the first one to use it.
My name gets mentioned even when I am not doing anything.

Consults are your best friend!
(Read that again)
A consult is a perfect way to demonstrate to the primary team of your capabilities.
I have lost count as to how many times I have been asked to help out with a case despite not being oncall.
The teams start trusting you!

The referring physician is your best friend, the patients'(insert family member) is your BFF.
Be nice to them & they will start referring everyone around them to you.
I have people calling from neighboring states because they were told how I treated so & so

You will be the new face at your hospital,utilize that to your advantage.
I dress up for my clinic days, don't matter if I am postcall/oncall/have cases.
I make sure I look presentable to my patients in the office.
My partners wear scrubs in the office.
You will stand out!

When starting out try to focus on getting comfortable with a specific type of procedure before moving on to a different variety.
For example: I have yet to try SADi at my hospital, still perfecting my gastric bypass technique.
Don't want to be trying too many things at once.

Start working on getting FACS, FASMBS, or whatever it is that your field offers, from day one.
Although it might seem a bit eccentric to have so many letters after your name...it will surely make you stand out.

Once you feel that you have got a good grasp of being a new attending, you can start focusing on a specific niche that you really want to practice.
For example I was doing breast, thyroids, hemorrhoids, abscess drainage etc, now focusing on AWR, Bariatric, Foregut, CRS

If your hospital has opportunities to join a committee, you should pounce on that.
Sitting face to face with the admin has been a game changer for me.
You can get things moving along much faster.
For example we were able to aquire Davinci robot due to that.

It is said that the first two years into practice is a forerunner of one's career.
I took that to heart and worked on it from day one (8/3/2020).
Now I am able to truck along the path that I have created.
You are the captain of the ship!

Just checked, I ended up doing 75 procedures in June 2022.
Robotic: AWR hernias, gastric bypasses, para esophageals.
Laparoscopic: choles, LARs, appys.
Endo: EGDs, PEGs
Open: Lumps n bumps, hemorrhoids
