4th STORY IN SERIES

When Kamsa, son of Ugrasena, killed six sons of Devaki, a part of the lustre of Lord Viśnu, known as Ananta, became the seventh child entering Devaki’s womb.

Lord Viśnu commanded his Yoga-Māyā “You go to Vraja! There in the settlement of cowherds headed by Nanda dwells Rohini, the wife of Vāsudeva. In the womb of Devaki lies my part-manifestation known as Śesa. Taking him from her womb, transfer him to Rohinis womb."

Lord further asked his Yoga-Māyā to be born of Yaśoda (wife of Nanda). The child from the womb of Devaki was transferred to that of Rohini by the goddess Yoga nidrā. The child was born as Balārama the elder brother of Krśna.

Lord Viśnu then entered the womb of Devaki.

When Kamsa perceived that Devaki bearing in her womb the invincible Lord Viśnu and beaming with pure smiles, illuminated whole prison house with her effulgence he was puzzled and wanted to kill Devaki herself. However the sin of killing his own sister when she was pregnant

made Kamsa desist from his darkest design of killing Devaki Kamsa thus continued to await his birth.

When came the most auspicious time full of all blessings, when the constellation Rohini presided over by god Brahmā, when all the directions became clear and propitious.

The waters of rivers became crystal clear, lakes bloomed with lotuses, with exception of demons minds of all creatures became filled with delight. When Lord Viśnu was about to incarnate kettle-drums sounded in celestial region, Kinnaras and Gandharvas burst forth singing,

Siddhas and Caracas sang prayers; ladies of the Vidyādhara clan danced. Overwhelmed with joy gods and sages showered flowers; following the roaring of the seas, clouds gave forth a low rumbling sound.

At midnight when the darkness tormenting the people was thickening,

Lord Viśnu, the Indweller of the hearts of all, manifested himself in his complete divine form, like the full moon rising in the East, through Devaki who was like unto a goddess.

Vāsudeva saw that wonderful child of lotus-like eyes, endowed with four arms, bearing a conch

and wielding a mace and a discus and a lotus; having on his chest the Srivatsa mark of curl of golden hair, with the Kaustubha gem hanging from his neck but beautified by his neck; clad in yellow silken garments, possessing the charming complexion of rain-bearing cloud;

his profuse locks of hair bathed in the lustre of his crown and earrings studded with invaluable Vaidūrya-gems (lapis lazuli); resplendent with his exquisite and valuable zone, armlets, bracelets and other ornaments. With eyes blooming wide open with amazement,

Vāsudeva beheld Lord Hari born as his son. With his mind confused with rapture on that happy and auspicious occasion of Krśna’s incarnation, Vāsudeva was overcome with delight and gave ten thousand cows as gift to Brāhmanas.

In city of Mathura on one occasion, Vāsudeva, son of Sura, whose marriage with Devaki was celebrated, ascended the chariot with Devaki, to proceed to his place after marriage.

being desirous of pleasing his sister (Devaki), took over the reins of horses. As procession of bride and bridegroom started, conchs, clarionets, drums and kettle-drums were sounded.

On the way, an incorporeal voice from the sky addressed Kamsa who was holding the reins:

“Oh foolish fellow, eighth son from the womb of her whom you are conducting, shall slay you”.

Being thus warned, Kamsa with a sword in hand, seized his sister and proceeded to kill her. Vāsudeva pleaded "You possess virtues how is it that you attempt to kill your sister."

The guardian deities who preside over the 8 points of the compass ie. the four cardinal and four intermediate points of the compass are:

1. Indra, east;

2. Agni, south-east;

3. Yama, south;

4. Surya, south-west;

5. Varuna, west;

6. Vayu, north-west;

Each of these guardian deities has an elephant who takes part in the defence and protection of the quarter, and these eight elephants are themselves called Loka-palas:

1) Indra's elephant at the east is Airavata.
